Reading the Cannaanite Genocide (original) (raw)
How can Christians possibly read the biblical command to exterminate the Canaanites as a good word? My theological suggestion is that we recognize ourselves in the Canaanites, as those who deserve death. That locates us properly in the story, as those whose only hope is the undeserved mercy of God. The talk includes reflections on what it means to read this way, identifying ourselves with people in the story--a version of the ancient biblical form of reading called typology.
