Photonic microwave bandpass filter with negative coefficients using a polarization modulator
2007
A novel photonic microwave bandpass filter with negative coefficients implemented using a polarization modulator (PolM) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed filter, a lightwave from a tunable laser source (TLS) is sent to a PolM, with the incident lightwave adjusted to have its polarization direction aligned at an angle of 45 to the principal axes of the PolM. A microwave signal is applied to the PolM through its RF port. Thanks to the polarization modulation in the PolM, two complementary microwave signals with identical amplitudes carried by two optical carriers with orthogonal polarizations are generated. The two complementary optical microwave signals are then sent to an optical delay line consisting of one section or two sections of polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF), with the polarization directions aligned with the fast and slow axes of the PMF. A photonic microwave bandpass filter with two or four taps is obtained.
Tunable all-optical negative multitap microwave filters based on uniform fiber Bragg gratings
Optics Letters, 2003
We present a novel and simple technique for obtaining transversal filters with negative coefficients by using uniform fiber Bragg gratings. We demonstrate a wide tuning range, good performance, low cost, and easy implementation of multitap filters in an all-optical passive configuration in which negative taps are obtained by use of the transmission of a broadband source through uniform Bragg gratings.
All-optical WDM microwave filter with negative coefficients
IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2005
A novel all-optical incoherent microwave filter with negative coefficients based on multiple optical carriers and a dispersive medium is presented. Negative coefficients are obtained by means of the phase inversion in a single electrooptic Mach-Zehnder modulator and the modulator dependence with wavelength. In this way, negative coefficients can be implemented using a single modulator. Finally, experimental results for a notch filter showing the feasibility of the technique are provided.
Tunable Photonic Microwave Notch Filter With Negative Coefficient Based on Polarization Modulation
IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2007
A novel tunable photonic microwave notch filter with negative and positive coefficients is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The coefficients can be achieved by polarization modulation along with an electrical signal. The two polarization-modulated signals, which have a relative time delay, are combined, and detected by a photodetector. The transfer response of the filter shows a very stable operation irrespective of the coherence length of the source used. Moreover, the free spectral range of the filter, which shows a sharp notch, can be changed by using a tunable differential group delay generator over the range of 3.16-4.31 GHz.
Tunable Photonic Microwave Filter With Single Bandpass Based on a Phase-Shifted Fiber Bragg Grating
IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2000
A novel tunable photonic microwave single bandpass filter based on the optical resonance originated by a local phase shift introduced in the periodic structure of a fiber Bragg grating is proposed. Dynamic control of the phase shift is obtained employing a piezoelectric transducer in order to stretch the grating, thus changing the resonance wavelength. A photonic microwave filter is obtained by using an optical single-sideband modulation. Experimental results are provided in order to prove the concept.
Photonic microwave tunable single-bandpass filter based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer
IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2006
The authors present the theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration of a novel single-bandpass tunable microwave filter. The filter is based on a broadband optical source and a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer and shows a high Q factor over a tuning range of 5-17 GHz. A generalized analysis considering that the optical signal propagates along optical delay lines with a dispersion slope different from zero is presented.

In this paper, we have demonstrated a duplex microwave photonic filter system. The reconfigurability of a microwave passband filter by using a birefringent optical filter has also been demonstrated experimentally. The effect of filtering normally depends on the intermodal separation of a multimode laser diode (MLD), as well as the chromatic dispersion parameter and the length of a Single Mode-Standard Fiber (SM-SF). However, in this work, the intermodal separation of the MLD is altered by an optical filter which consists of a section of birefringent optical fiber (BOF) placed between crossed polarizers. Using this filter, six passbands in the frequency range of 0–10 GHz are obtained. Our duplex Microwave Photonic Filter (MPF) system is driven by only a single optical source. Performance evaluation for the filtered passband is also given in terms of the Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR). On average, an SNR of 13.87 dB is obtained for all the passbands generated by our duplex Microwave Phot...

Microwave photonic filters (MPFs) with the capabilities of bandwidth reconfigurability and frequency tunability in the GHz range are of great interest in high-speed communications systems. In this paper, we propose a new reconfigurable multiband microwave photonic filter (MPF) using a tunable Fabry–Perot Filter (FPF). It is demonstrated by numerical simulations that the modification of the intermodal separation (δλ) of a multimode laser diode (MLD) by tunable FPF allows for the reconfigurable multi-passband of the MPF. Our simulation results show that our new filter system is promising to communications systems.

This paper presents a tunable transversal filter working with a single optical carrier at constant wavelength. The filter consists of a set of chirped gratings whose time delay is tuned with respect to the emission wavelength of a fiber laser by a piezoelectric actuator; extra lengths of fiber are inserted in the filter arms in order to avoid interferences between signals reflected in different gratings. Two and three taps filters are experimentally demonstrated, the filters transfer function is electronically tuned within the free spectral range.
