Gauge couplings in four-dimensional type I string orbifolds
Nuclear Physics B, 1999
We compute threshold effects to gauge couplings in four-dimensional Z N orientifold models of type I strings with N = 2 and N = 1 supersymmetry, and study their dependence on the geometric moduli. We also compute the tree-level (disk) couplings of the open sector gauge fields to the twisted closed string moduli of the orbifold in various models and study their effects and that of the one-loop threshold corrections on gauge coupling unification. We interpret the results from the (supergravity) effective theory point of view and comment on the conjectured heterotic-type I duality.
The Fayet-Iliopoulos term in Type-I string theory and M-theory
Physics Letters B, 1998
The magnitude of the Fayet-Iliopoulos term is calculated for compactifications of Type-I string theory and Horava-Witten Ž . M-theory in which there exists a pseudo-anomalous U 1 . Contrary to various conjectures, it is found that in leading order X in the perturbative expansion around the weakly-coupled M-theory or Type-I limits, a result identical to that of the weakly-coupled E = E heterotic string is obtained. The result is independent of the values chosen for the Type-I string 8 8 scale or the size of the M-theory 11th dimension, only depending upon Newton's constant and the unified gauge coupling. q

We search for supersymmetric standard model realizations with extra singlets and extra U (1) using the heterotic string compactification on the Z6−II orbifold with two Wilson lines. The effective superpotential produced through the vacuum restabilization mechanism is examined for three representative Pati-Salam string models obtained in the literature. An automated selection of semirealistic vacua along flat directions in the non-Abelian singlet modes field space is performed by requiring the presence of massless pairs of electroweak Higgs bosons having trilinear superpotential couplings with massless singlet modes and the decoupling of color triplet exotic modes needed to suppress B and L number violating processes. We calculate the moduli dependent part of string one-loop threshold corrections to gauge couplings for the heterotic string theory compactified on abelian toroidal orbifolds, allowing for arbitrary discrete Wilson lines. We show that the knowledge of threshold corrections for any such compactification is equivalent to solving a class of integrals. We solve a sub-class of these integrals and show how any model can be mapped onto this class by fractional linear transformations of its fixed plane moduli. Modular symmetries of the final expression are discussed.
Kähler potentials for orbifold theories from string amplitudes
Physics Letters B, 1992
KIhler potentials for the moduli and matter fields of the ZXxZ, orbifoid are derived to quadratic order in the moduli by direct calcuIation of string amplitudes. This method is also applied to a Z3 orbifold where some matter fields are in twisted sectors with Wilson lines. so that methods relying on the relationship of matter fields to moduli through the superconformal algebra cannot be employed.
Discrete torsion in non-geometric orbifolds and their open-string descendants
Nuclear Physics B, 2000
We discuss some Z L N × Z R N orbifold compactifications of the type IIB superstring to D = 4, 6 dimensions and their type I descendants. Although the Z L N × Z R N generators act asymmetrically on the chiral string modes, they result into left-right symmetric models that admit sensible unorientable reductions. We carefully work out the phases that appear in the modular transformations of the chiral amplitudes and identify the possibility of introducing discrete torsion. We propose a simplifying ansatz for the construction of the open-string descendants in which the transversechannel Klein-bottle, annulus and Möbius-strip amplitudes are numerically identical in the proper parametrization of the world-sheet. A simple variant of the ansatz for the Z L 2 × Z R 2 orbifold gives rise to models with supersymmetry breaking in the open-string sector. 1
Multi-instanton and string loop corrections in toroidal orbifold models
Journal of High Energy Physics, 2008
We analyze N = 2 (perturbative and non-perturbative) corrections to the effective theory in type I orbifold models where a dual heterotic description is available. These corrections may play an important role in phenomenological scenarios. More precisely, we consider two particular compactifications: the Bianchi-Sagnotti-Gimon-Polchinski orbifold and a freely-acting Z 2 × Z 2 orbifold with N = 1 supersymmetry and gauge group SO(q) × SO(32 − q). By exploiting perturbative calculations of the physical gauge couplings on the heterotic side, we obtain multi-instanton and one-loop string corrections to the Kähler potential and the gauge kinetic function for these models. The non-perturbative corrections appear as sums over relevant Hecke operators, whereas the one-loop correction to the Kähler potential matches the expression proposed in [1, 2]. We argue that these corrections are universal in a given class of models where target-space modular invariance (or a subgroup of it) holds.
M-strings and transverse orbifold
The European Physical Journal C, 2016
We discuss the partition function of a single M5-brane on a circle with transverse orbifold of ADE type and show that the modes captured by the partition function are those of the tensor multiplet and the thee form field. We show that the bound states of M-strings corresponding to pair of simple roots appear, for all ADE, only when the momentum on the circle is turned on.
