Using XML to support information exchange in construction projects
Automation in Construction, 2004
With the application of information technology, many parties involved in construction projects have turned to handle the management information using computer systems among themselves, while they still exchange information on papers between them. It has introduced such deficiencies as inefficiency of collaboration and re-entry of data in the management of construction projects. This study aims to develop a system for the parties in construction projects to collaborate on Web to improve the management of the exchanged information. In this paper, the characteristics of the exchanged information in construction projects in China are summarized based on the literature survey and field investigation, and a Web-based approach to developing a system for the management of exchanged information in construction projects is proposed. Then the prototype system that we have developed by using the latest information technologies including eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is examined and its applicability is discussed. D
Automation in Construction, 2008
As part of an industry-lead initiative, standards have been developed to enable bulk exchange of project data between project collaboration systems used by the construction industry. Through the work of developing exchange standards to the practical implementation of data transfer, this paper examines the issues that need to be addressed by both solution providers and their clients when considering moving a project's data between two different instances of collaborative software. It highlights the practical ...
Design of an XML-Based Document Flow Management System for Construction Projects Using Web Services
Proceedings of the 20th International Symposium on Automation and Robotics in Construction ISARC 2003 -- The Future Site, 2003
This paper presents the design of an XML-based document flow management system, called X-DFM (XML-based Document Flow Management), for increasing efficiency in processing documents in construction projects. X-DFM provides four services via Web Services: the document flow services, content management services, authorization services, and message services. The document flow services are designed based on the wfXML standard and with the consideration of flow processing security. The content management services support not only management of an XML document as a whole but also the contents in the document. The authorization services provide authorization controls of user accounts and system functions. The message services support message passing among users and between X-DFM components.
A proposed open infrastructure for construction project document sharing
1998
The paper gives a comprehensive overview of the European Esprit Condor project. The project provides a migration path from document-based to model-based approaches to information representation and structuring. The paper, first, presents the approach that is adopted to describe the business processes and document management practices of the project end-users, and also to capture the requirements of the Condor system. The chosen approach made use of the IDEF0 and UML (Unified Modelling Language) methodologies. A Strategy towards the integration of the Electronic Document Management (EDM) systems used within the project is then given. The paper also includes a comprehensive description of the overall modelling infrastructure that supports the proposed system. Finally, a description of the prototype V1, that implements the inter-working services between heterogeneous EDM solutions, is given. The project is ongoing and supported by a user interest group, which involves representatives from a variety of non-construction industry companies all over Europe.
bcXML, an XML Vocabulary for Building and Construction
Electronic information networking in Building and Construction (BC) has been the subject of research for the last two decades and indeed much progress has been made. For example, the exchange of electronic technical drawings, geometry models and building product models is possible today. Also in the eCommerce area much progress has been made, with the Internet dramatically increasing ICT awareness in BC. Several software vendors are marketing interesting Internet based systems that support eProcurement, sometimes even including back office-integration (job costing, accounting). Despite these positive developments, progress in open, meaningful (BC semantics) communication over the Internet has been limited, and subsequently Internet based project information communication in large projects hardly exists. The reason is that there is still no common multi lingual BC vocabulary that can be used by both humans and computer applications. Such a vocabulary, that contains BC notions like 'beam', 'paint', 'door', 'foundation pile', cannot be implemented with the existing, HTML-based, Internet technology. HTML, the Hyper Text Markup Language, is what it says, a markup language, not a language to define human and computer understandable content. With the new Internet language XML, eXtensible Markup Language [1], it is possible to define and communicate both content and markup. This means that XML supports the development of XML vocabularies as required by BC. The European IST 10303 'eConstruct' Project is doing just this with the development of bcXML (Building Construction XML). The paper presents the latest results of the project focusing on the aspects related to information networking in Building and Civil Engineering.

The lack of a unified structure of the information model at different stages of the life cycle for different types of capital construction objects and the lack of requirements for the composition and content of the information model causes the problem of transferring the information model of the capital construction object from one stage to another in order to exchange and analyze data on objects throughout the entire life cycle. cycle, which will allow to simultaneously take into account technological, financial, technical parameters and the time factor, maintaining the data in an up-to-date and complete state at any time for all participants in the investment and construction process, including management companies, operating, repair, construction, subcontracting, design and research organizations, supervisory and control bodies. The goal of this article is to develop a concept for using XML schemas for transferring from one stage of the life cycle to another and storing informati...
Managing the software design documents with XML
1998
It is hard to manage the software design documents within a distributed development team. The issues include the format, distribution and evolution of data. This paper mainly focuses on the issues of the format and distribution, and addresses how we can manage the software design documents for the distributed software development in the standard based way. In the software engineering community, Unified Modeling Language (UML) has been widely accepted as an object-oriented software analysis/design methodology, since it provides most of the concepts and notations that are essential for documenting object oriented models. UML, however, does not have an explicit format for interchanging its models intentionally. This paper addresses this lack and proposes UXF (UML exchange Format), which is an exchange format for UML models, based on XML (Extensible Markup Language). It is a format powerful enough to express, publish, access and exchange UML models and a natural extension from the existing Internet environment. It serves as a communication vehicle for developers, and as a well-structured data format for development tools. We demonstrate some proof-of-concept applications that show the merits of UXF. We are especially interested in a distributed model management system that manages the software design documents over the Internet with UXF. This system leverages the team development, reuse of design documents and tool interoperability by publishing a set of CORBA interfaces. Our work shows an important step in sharing and exchanging software design documents, and indicates the future direction of the interoperable software development tools.
Information Systems have an eminent role for successful management of large projects which involve multi-bodies. These bodies have to work together and also share important information for successful scheduling and development of the project. So, management of information systems is very necessary to provide centralized documents in order to satisfy information needs of different persons having different interests and roles for the project. So, a need arises for a platform which is able to develop the above mentioned information systems. This paper discusses the functional requirements for these information systems. A methodology has also been configured for developing information systems which serve the development of collaborative projects.
An XML implementation process model for enterprise applications
Computers in Industry, 2004
This study proposes an implementation process model for integrating eXtensible Markup Language (XML) into enterprise applications, which also meets the inter-organization data exchange standard of RosettaNet. This model is motivated by the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) group of Taiwan's Mechanical Industry Research Laboratories (MIRL) in meeting their needs on enterprise applications integration for producing the data exchange specifications. There are seven stages in this process model, but only the analysis-and-design stage is specific to XML characteristics for defining Data Type Definition (DTD) to be used with XML in the inter-organizational data exchange. This paper illustrates the core sub-process of defining DTD and producing XML documents. We start with a MIRL example regarding information exchange of a work order between the MIRL-MES and an ERP system connected by IBM MQSeries. Then the RosettaNet components are used to demonstrate how additional elements can be incorporated in the analysis-and-design stage by comparisons.

Construction projects typically involve a large number of documents, which are exchanged among multiple parties, including the owner, contractors and engineers. Based on the data warehousing technique, this study presents a method which can utilize electronically exchanged documents among project participants for decision support. A prototypical system called EXPLYZER is developed and tested through its application in a construction project. D
