Cloud computing is a promising IT paradigm which enables the Internet's evolution into a global market of collaborating services. Cloud computing semantic interoperability plays a key role in making this a reality. Towards this direction, a comprehensive and systematic report of Cloud computing interoperability efforts by standardization groups, industry and research community is carried out. The main objective of this report is to derive an initial set of semantic interoperability requirements to be supported by existing as well as next generation Cloud systems. Τhis report motivates and encourages the Cloud community to adopt a common Cloud computing interoperability framework with core dimensions the creation of a common data model and a standardized Cloud interface (API), which will constitute the base for the development of a semantically interoperable Cloud environment.

The vendor lock-in is a prominent issue in cloud computing. It is caused by cloud providers who offer proprietary services, which hinders the cloud interoperability. Client-centric interoperability enables the migration of the data and applications across clouds; it gives the clients control over their workloads and a wider range of service choices. Whereas, provider-centric interoperability allows the providers to collaborate. Thus, providers, who have spare resources, can lend them to other providers who lack computational or storage capabilities to overcome the limitations of their local resources. In this article, we conduct a survey to differentiate between client-and provider-centric interoperability solutions. We aim to provide an up-to-date analysis of the current tendencies and the neglected areas of the cloud interoperability field. Thus, we study the cloud service interoperability evolution through the years. Furthermore, we propose definitions for the intra-cloud and inter-cloud interoperability. Moreover, we propose a taxonomy to classify the cloud interoperability approaches into client-centric and provider-centric categories. Then, for each category, we classify the approaches based on their interoperability environment into single cloud or interconnected clouds. Finally, we analyze and compare the approaches based on multiple criteria. The study reveals the focus on the client-centric solutions and the interoperability in interconnected clouds. We notice more interest in the data and application levels interoperability, mainly, in infrastructure as a service model. We also find that client-centric solutions are, mostly, semantic technologies and brokers. However, provider-centric solutions are middleware, protocols, and standards. We conclude that a generic cloud service interoperability model is needed. On the Interoperability in Multiple Clouds

Interoperability between Clouds is a desire of the last half decade to fulfill the dream of apparently unlimited capacity of the interconnected e-infrastructures as well as the elimination of the vendor lock-in. In this paper we try to point towards the missing pieces by identifying the requirements and the degree of their coverage by the existing solutions. Moreover, a particular case, of application interoperability, is studied using a concrete and recent deployable and open-source platform as a service.
A Novel Approach to Address Interoperability Concerns in Cloud Computing
For the reenactment of internet and cloud technologies, interoperability is an important touchstone. Most of the consumers are analyzing the appropriateness of cloud to employ themselves for their enterprise or personalized operations. Customers are selfsatisfied at the inception, but expectation changes. Based on their business escalation it needs further adoption of modern cloud services the existing cloud provider fails to offer. Hence the user needs interoperability and portability to ship their assets from one cloud to other cloud. The complication faced by the customers in shifting their assets remains as a challenge to be addressed. In this paper we outline the existing cloud technologies, interoperability issues and possible solution to overcome the problems.
Towards a reference architecture for semantically interoperable clouds

This paper focuses on the emerging problem of semantic interoperability between heterogeneous cooperating Cloud platforms. We try to pave the way towards a Reference Architecture for Semantically Interoperable Clouds (RASIC). To this end, three fundamental and complementary computing paradigms, namely Cloud computing, Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and lightweight semantics are used as the main building blocks. The open, generic Reference Architecture for Semantically Interoperable Clouds introduces a scalable, reusable and transferable approach for facilitating the design, deployment and execution of resource intensive SOA services on top of semantically interlinked Clouds. In order to support the development of semantically interoperable Cloud systems based on RASIC, the model of a common Cloud API is also specified.
Interoperability Standards for Cloud Architecture

Enabling cloud infrastructures to evolve into a transparent platform raises interoperability issues. Interoperability requires standard data models and communication technologies compatible with the existing Internet infrastructure. To reduce vendor lock-in situations, cloud computing must implement common strategies regarding standards, interoperability and portability. Open standards are of critical importance and need to be embedded into interoperability solutions. Interoperability is determined at the data level as well as the service level. Relevant modelling standards and integration solutions shall be analysed in the context of clouds.
Defining Inter-Cloud Architecture for Interoperability and Integration

This paper presents an on-going research to develop the Inter-Cloud Architecture, which addresses the architectural problems in multi-provider multi-domain heterogeneous cloud based applications integration and interoperability, including integration and interoperability with legacy infrastructure services. Cloud technologies are evolving into a common way to virtualize infrastructure services and to offer on-demand service provisioning. In this way, they add physical/hardware platform independency and mobility to the existing distributed computing and networking technologies. The paper uses existing standards in Cloud Computing, in particular the recently published NIST Cloud Computing Reference Architecture (CCRA) as the basis for the Inter-Cloud architecture. The proposed Inter-Cloud Architecture defines three complimentary components addressing Inter-Cloud interoperability and integration: multilayer Cloud Services Model that combines commonly adopted cloud service models, such as IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, in one multilayer model with corresponding inter-layer interfaces; Inter-Cloud Control and Management Plane that supports cloud based applications interaction; and Inter-Cloud Federation Framework. The paper briefly presents the architectural framework for cloud based infrastructure services provisioning being developed by the authors. The proposed architecture intends to provide a basis for building multilayer cloud services integration framework and to allow optimised provisioning of computing, storage and networking resources. In this way, the proposed Inter-Cloud architecture will facilitate cloud interoperability and integration.
