National development, measured by the degree of socio-economic advancement of a country, reflected in her positive changes in science and technology, is a function of the standard of technical education available to her citizens. This paper attempts to discuss the gradual development roles, problems and prospects of technical education in Nigeria’s national development. Brief references were made to the background of technical education and the attendant misconceptions that tend to hinder its progress. Some instance of the role of technical education and the importance of skill acquisition and self reliance as the panacea to national development were highlighted. Technical Education as a Tool for Ensuring Sustainable Development: A Case of India

This paper notes that education needs to essentially lead to sustainable development serving two-fold purpose – eradicating the problems of unemployment and poverty; and ensuring equitable distribution of wealth while ensuring the right understanding leading to a peaceful, prosperous and developed world. In its current state, technical education doesn’t seem to serve the above two objectives. The paper presents a holistic view of technical education in India. In order to ensure sustainable development for India in the contemporary global scenario, the paper finds technical education to be one of the core competencies that need to be developed. Technical Education system is dynamic in nature. It faces many hurdles in response to societal, technological and economic changes in the environment both home and foreign. The debate today is not only about the value and role of Technical education in the social and economic development of a nation but has a broader aspect. Technical education is widely recognized as a vital part of the total education and training system. The real challenge is how to reposition it by shifting towards a developmental paradigm that holds sustainability as its core. It is hoped that this paper will provide a definite idea on technical education and its importance and some useful insights on the underlying meaning, policies and choices which may help to shape the systems of technical education and training further.

Regional Integration of Technical and Vocational Education and Training in ECOWAS Region

This article explores the current status of the TVET system in West African countries and identifies strategies for effective integration within the ECOWAS region. The study used a mixed-methods research design to investigate regional TVET system integration within ECOWAS. Data was collected from 83 participants randomly selected from Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo. The collected data was analysed using thematic analysis. The findings show that each member state has a unique TVET system with some crossborder initiatives to collaborate and share best practices. Similarly, the results reveal that the integration of TVET systems faces multifaceted challenges rooted in the socioeconomic fabric of regions and the perception of vocational training. The findings show a lack of coherence and coordination, leading to inconsistencies in training quality, limited resources, and limited mobility of graduates. To address these challenges, there is a need for customized strategies and a concerted effort from policymakers, educators, industry stakeholders, and the community to develop a robust, adaptable, and forward-looking regional TVET system for ECOWAS member states. Therefore, it is imperative to harmonize standards and develop a regionally integrated TVET model so as to improve the quality and relevance of TVET in ECOWAS. This can create a skilled workforce, promote youth employment, and foster the sustainable development of the region, like other regions that have an excellent harmonized and integrated regional TVET system within the region.
