Empty sella and bilateral transverse sinus stenosis predict raised intracranial pressure in the absence of papilloedema (original) (raw)

2006, Journal of Neurology

AI-generated Abstract

Objective: To investigate the significance of empty sella (ES) detected by MRI as an indicator of possible idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) in individuals with headaches and normal MRI results. Methods: Evaluated 586 patients, of which 31 were found to have ES, focusing on MR venography (MRV) to assess the transverse sinuses. Results: Of the 31 patients, 8 with bilateral transverse sinus stenosis showed raised intracranial pressure. Conclusion: Individuals with ES on MRI and headaches without papilloedema should be assessed for transverse sinus stenosis via MRV and considered for lumbar puncture to exclude IIH.
