The Atlantic Schools of Business (ASB) have been hosting an annual business conference for the past 39 years. This conference does not belong to any one organization and has long been perceived as not having a structure. Further, until 2005, it lacked a standing conference. However, this lack of physical structure does not mean that there isn't a concrete form to the organization. Utilizing Acker's sub-structured framework, not only will the structure of the organization become apparent, but as well the gendered nature.

Engaging Acker: toward an understanding of the gendered organization

2005

The purpose of this paper is to explore Joan Acker's system of gendering processes and to assess the potential of this framework to help researchers better identify those activities in and around organizations that maintain, support, or oppose their gendered nature. It is anticipated that a thorough understanding of these processes will be instrumental in effecting change.

Over the Pond and Across the Water': Developing the Field of 'Gendered Organizations

Gender, Work and Organization, 2002

This article is concerned with the development of gendered organizations as a field of study. It begins by exploring some of the factors that militate against integrating organization studies and gender studies and gendered organizations scholarship over national/continental divides. Increasingly doubtful about whether traditional (mainstream and critical) organization theories will or can adequately address gender, we contend that scholars of gendered organizations should`strike out' on our/their own,`boldly going' into unfamiliar territory to create new, innovative theories, concepts and ideas. We make various suggestions about possible future directions for theorizing and research.
