Challenges in the Management of Virtual Organizations

Virtual organizations (VOs) are considered to be an answer to tightening requirements of cost-effectiveness, time and quality, especially in a global environment. In addition, it is expected that collaboration within VOs contributes to flexibility, agility, customer orientation and decrease of risks. However, these objectives are not achieved automatically. The management of independent entities with individual, sometimes even contradictory, aims is a difficult task containing uncertainty. The Inter-organizational distribution of processes and activities may lead to high coordination costs, delays in deliveries, quality problems, information leaks and loss of knowledge. To prevent the problems, proactive VO management is needed. The paper discusses the challenges for the development of proactive management. The main experience behind the paper comes from the one-of-a-kind manufacturing.
Virtual Organizations: What You See May Not Be What You Get
Virtual organizations are new organizational forms comprising a set of network transactions that differ from those found in markets and hierarchies. This paper explores the nature of these network transactions through an in-depth study of a virtual firm. The virtual organization is characterized by constant organizing through virtual teams and alliances, a unique management culture and a set of norms, information and knowledge sharing enabled by information technology, and employee selfgovernance. The organization gains from a culture of fast-response and efficiency while employees are trusted to exercise discretion and take initiatives. In the past decade, complex bureaucratic of organizations was containing such consistency and zeal that damaged it consider indecent and sometimes impossible. In this atmosphere, idea of creating virtual organizations was not dissimilar a dream. But today, the dramatic changes in the organization and inconceivable development of communication technology ,information and pervading computer networks in organizations and even homes, on the other hand, inefficient traditional organizations in response to these developments, cause fading of the administrative organization (bureaucracy) and Netocray reign(network reign on organization).However, the idea of virtual organizations not only has been appeared real, but is an undeniable necessity to 21st century organization. Today, many employees from their homes through information and communication networks such as the Internet, pager, fax, video conferencing and ... Offer their services to organizations. Also large and small organizations, by glancing unity to performing a special work in a group by using information and communication technology, even collaborate with their former rivals and make great things. However, in this paper, try to explain the need to address issues such as the concept of virtual organizations, and also life cycle, types, advantages and disadvantages of virtual organization as it possible.

The need to remain competitive in the open market forces companies to concentrate on their core competencies while searching for alliances when additional skills or resources are needed to fulfill business opportunities. The changing business situation of companies and customer needs have motivated researchers to introduce Virtual Organization (VO) idea. A Virtual Organization is always a form of partnership and managing partners and handling partnerships are crucial. Virtual organizations are defined as a temporary collection of enterprises that cooperate and share resources, knowledge, and competencies to better respond to business opportunities. This paper presents base concepts of virtual organizations including properties, management concepts, operational concepts, and main issues in collaboration such as security and authentication.

In the center of supply chain management initiatives are the series of applications that synchronize demand and supply, manage inventory, ensure service-level commitments, and provide greater visibility into the manufacturing operations. At the same time the concept of Virtual Organization (VO) challenges the way industrial production systems are planned and managed. The topic is analyzed in context of vertically integrated public limited company Eesti Energia AS (EE) located in the Republic of Estonia where for the companies that are related with electricity grid management is implemented software in the framework Tehnonet (TN), which uses concept of VO.
Implications for Information Management in a Virtual Organization
There is evidence of a paradigm shift in organizational structures as organizations utilize the internet technology to add a virtual dimension to their activities. Virtuality in the manufacturing domain is referred to as Virtual Enterprises (VE) or Extended Enterprises and within the commercial domain is referred to as the Virtual Organization. The key factor in virtuality is the information flows across enterprises. The quasi-integration of information systems is made possible by the technology but the implications for information management has received scant attention in the literature. This paper explores the concept of virtuality to identify the possible challenges for information management. This exploration identifies a preliminary set of prerequisites associated with information management in the virtual organization. Further research to help meet this challenge is identified.

The business environment of the 21st century require organizations to respond quickly to market demands and thus traditional organization structures and strategy are no longer capable of sustaining the needs of this relentless pace. New forms of organizations in the form of virtual organization (VO) hold promise in the network world. Several organizations worldwide have already been experimenting virtual organizations’ structures and processes. These new virtual structures and processes, however, will require newer strategies to succeed. This paper attempts to highlight some strategy and structural issues of a VO. The study is conceptual in nature and inferences have been drawn from existing literature and practices.
