Hybrid Control and Reservation Architecture for Multidomain Burst Switched Network (original) (raw)
2000, Journal of Lightwave Technology
Optical burst switching realizes all-optical communication by dividing data transmission system into control plane and data plane. In order to implement control plane two controlling mechanisms such as distributed and centralized control and reservation models have been presented in literature. Both of the architectures have pros and cons associated such as distributed model lacks efficient resource utilization while centralized model is nonscalable. In order to overcome these, a new hybrid control and reservation mechanism has been presented by the authors. The proposed model is based on clustering technique where each cluster consists of cluster head and member nodes. Cluster head performs major functionalities in the network such as path establishment, routing and resource management, fault management, etc., while member nodes perform data switching functionality. In order to implement the architecture, a signaling protocol is also presented. In this paper, we discuss different scenarios required for the implementation of the proposed hybrid model. These scenarios detail the message dialogs exchange between different network nodes and between different software modules during lightpath establishment, data transmission, and connection teardown operations. The goal of efficient resource utilization is achieved through centralized control of network resources while scalability is achieved through dividing the network into multiple domains. Finally, the simulation section shows the mechanism of designing the multidomain architecture, network bandwidth utilization comparison and reduction in end-to-end data transmission latency.

A Novel Hybrid Scheme for Contention Minimization in Optical Burst Switched Network
ICTACT Journal on Communication Technology, 2015
In Optical Burst Switched (OBS) Networks, data is transported in a bufferless network and hence there is fair amount of possibility of contention among the data bursts. This occurs when multiple bursts contend for the same link. The existing reactive contention resolution schemes attempt to address issue of contention without making any efforts to minimize the occurrences of contention in the network. Also, the existing proactive contention minimization schemes fail to provide improvement in contention loss at a very high load. Therefore, we are presenting new scheme for reducing the occurrence of contention in OBS network and it is known as Dynamic Hybrid Cluster and Deflection Feedback (DHCF) scheme. In proposed DHCF scheme entire OBS network is partitioned into many small clusters. In each cluster, one node acts as cluster head for gathering the information of resources in the network. The contention is minimized using clustering approach and it can be further improved with the help of deflection feedback mechanism. A performance metrics is considered to evaluate merits of the proposed DHCF scheme and its effects on overall network performance. Also, the comparison of the performance of the DHCF scheme with limited hybrid deflection and retransmission (LHDR) scheme and dynamic hybrid retransmission in deflection routing (DHRD) scheme is made. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme gives improvement in Burst Loss Probability (BLP) in the range of 31% to 38% and delay improvement in the range of 64% to 74% on vBSN network. The vBSN is network topology.
Efficient Control Routing and Wavelength Assignment in Loss-Less Optical Burst Switching Networks
2015
The thesis deals with the problem of loss-less Optical Burst Switching (OBS) paradigm viability for future all-optical networks. This problem is decomposed into two problems: a) data transmission b) network control, and each problem is individually verified. The data transmission problem is related to the statistical multiplex on the optical domain hence the initial work is on preparation of a tool for simulation of loss-less OBS network, and Car-OBS (CAROBS) architecture is selected in this thesis. The CAROBS architecture is unique because allows buffering of contenting bursts in electronic domain. This buffering, however, degrades network performance parameters and increases capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expense (OPEX). In order to find the relation between performance parameters and node load, an elementary node behaviour was studied using the CAROBS models implemented with OMNeT++ simulator. This experiment shows relation between node load and requirement of opto-ele...
Staged reservation scheme for optical burst switching networks
IEICE Electronics Express, 2005
In this paper, the Staged Reservation Scheme (SRS) is introduced for Optical Burst-Switched (OBS) networks based on Just-Enough-Time (JET) protocol. With SRS the Data-Bursts are segmented into equal sub-bursts (data segments). SRS is to address the feasibility issues (e.g. segments delineation, and trailer-messages creation) associated with the implementation of burst segmentation techniques. The burst control packet is modified to carry the segments' number and length, therefore the data-bursts length. Furthermore, the network resource reservation is performed in stages to resolve contentions at the control packets level, and to reduce the packets loss probability.
On The Control Packet Structure of Optical Burst Switching Networks
Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is a prospective optical switching technology that can be deployed as the infrastructure of the future All-optical Internet. OBS is still at its definition phase. Hence, no definite OBS standard architecture has been established yet, including the control packet format. In this paper, a control packet structure is introduced. The structure provides constant transmission overhead and makes the control packet scalable to higher speeds. Without adjustments, the new control packet can be used with various OBS implementations. Furthermore, a simple analytical model is used to evaluate the performance of the OBS network, based on the new format of the control packet.
A new contention avoidance scheme in optical burst switch network
IEEE International Conference on Networks, 2008
Optical burst switching (OBS) is developed as an alternative switching technology, which combines advantages of both Optical circuit switching (OCS) and Optical packet switching (OPS) and avoids the disadvantages. In OBS control packet called control burst is separated from data packet called data burst. A control burst is sent in advance, which configures the switches in the path for the
