Corporate Executives’ Perceptions of CSR in the Listed Moroccan Companies
Oradea Journal of Business and Economics, 2022
The purpose of the paper is to analyze the perception of corporate social responsibility by corporate executives in the Moroccan context. To do so, we conducted a survey of seventy-four Moroccan corporate executives working in listed companies. Subjects were solicited by e-mail, sending them a questionnaire consisting of 37 items presented in the form of a five-point response scale (Likert scale). Our measurement scale was designed on the basis of Carroll's (1991) theoretical model of social responsibility. The study proposes a scale to measure corporate executives' perceptions of CSR in their company. The results of our study reveal two findings. The first one suggests that Moroccan corporate executives working in listed companies are more concerned about compliance with laws and ethical values than with a true CSR commitment. The second one highlights the fact that CSR commitment is a three-dimensional construct marked by a predominance of ethical-legal and philanthropic practices. The paper states the main conclusions of the study and provides some practical implications.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Theory and Practice in a Developing Country Context
Journal of Business Ethics, 2007
After providing an overview of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) research in different contexts, and noting the varied methodologies adopted, two robust CSR conceptualizations -one by Carroll (1979, 'A Three-Dimensional Conceptual Model of Corporate Performance', The Academy of Management Review 4(4), 497-505) and the other by Wood (1991, 'Corporate Social Perfor-mance Revisited', The Academy of Management Review 16 , 691-717) -have been adopted for this research and their integration explored. Using this newly synthesized framework, the research critically examines the CSR approach and philosophy of eight companies that are considered active in CSR in the Lebanese context. The findings suggest the lack of a systematic, focused, and institutionalized approach to CSR and that the understanding and practice of CSR in Lebanon are still grounded in the context of philanthropic action. The findings are qualified within the framework of existing contextual realities and relevant implications drawn accordingly.
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND GREEN ECONOMY: THE PERCEPTION OF LEBANESE BUSINESS LEADERS
This paper attempts to explore the perception of the Lebanese business leaders on Green Economy, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and their inter-relationships. Qualitative and deductive in nature, this paper uses 14 semi-structured interviews and the applied thematic analysis to outline the perception of business leaders. The findings deliver insight on the positive attitude of business leaders in regards to adopting a Green Economy model in Lebanon, reinforced by a consensus on the government leadership essentiality in implementing CSR policies. Further empirical and quantitative research would lead to better understanding of the phenomena, and would better inform CSR policy making on the practical level. The originality of the papers stems from applying the various CSR and Green Economy concepts to the societal setting of cultural diversity.
Corporate Ethics and Social Responsibility
Ethics requires freedom of action, is transversal to our activity, has a universal character, is innate and represents an absolute value. For all these reasons, it is imperative to train the managers of our society so that they do not engage in ethically objectionable behaviors, such as those that have been occurring in the countless corporate scandals of today. Therefore, the objective of this article is to research, through systematic review, the correlation between professional ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR). For this, bibliometric analysis was performed, based on a systematic search in the Scopus database. As a result, the authors propose a new concept, that of integrative responsibility, designed to ascertain the social responsibility of companies within and outside organizations.
The corporate governance and social responsibility nexus in the Lebanese banking industry
Corporate Governance: The international journal of business in society, 2016
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the contrasting views of banks and banking authorities in Lebanon regarding the corporate governance (CG) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) nexus. Design/methodology/approach Using survey responses collected from the managers of five Lebanese banks and banking authorities, the authors conduct a qualitative comparative study of the opinions on CG, CSR and CG–CSR nexus. Findings The findings of this paper reveal that while a CG culture is well-instituted by the authorities and that some forms of CSR are already practiced by banks, disagreements exist between the Lebanese banks and banking authorities in defining the CG–CSR nexus. While CG is viewed as an all-encompassing concept by the banking authorities, most banks ascribe to the paradigm that CG is component of CSR. Research limitations/implications The sample of this paper consists of large banks that have clear CG and CSR agendas. The results, therefore, cannot be generalize...
An Assessment of Lebanese Companies’ Motivators to Adopt CSR Strategies
Open Journal of Business and Management
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and its importance in companies around the globe have grown substantially in the past years. With the advent of globalization, managers in different contexts have been exposed to the notion of CSR and are being pressured to adopt CSR initiatives. This made organizations develop strategies to enhance managing their ways of working in a way that they can produce an overall positive impact on the surrounding environment. CSR helps the organization succeed in balancing its business goals and its impact on the environment. It is becoming vital for organizations to adopt environment-friendly ways of working, which not only lessens their negative impacts but also gives back to the community in general. However, despite CSR being a very significant issue, Lebanese companies, organizations and service industries are not quite embracing it as a fundamental part of their business plan. Failing to realize the authentic significance of CSR in the community and the low awareness levels about the topic will eventually have negative results on the companies themselves. Moreover, CSR is still a not well-comprehended term in Lebanese society as its benefits are vague and unclear. This research is an exploratory and quantitative study using a survey questionnaire distributed to a convenient sample of Lebanese managers and employees working in 5 different service industries in Lebanon. The purpose is to assess what motivates companies in Lebanon to adopt CSR strategies. Accordingly, the research also seeks to highlight people's awareness about CSR which in turn forces these companies to engage in CSR activities that will lead to a win-win situation. The outcomes may serve as eye openers and may shed light on important facts to be considered for further research or policy planning.
