The Idea of Ancient Hebrew Verse (original) (raw)

This study presupposes that, by means of the māšāl-verse originating in wisdom literature, it is possible to describe the archetype, i.e., the idea of ancient Hebrew verse. It has three characteristics: parallelism, two cola and colometrically balanced length of the cola. Thereby, parallelism of two cola can be explained as “the smallest plurality” of aspects that point to some phenomenon. The other six types of verses described here relate to the archetype by maintaining some of its characteristics and abandoning the others (e.g., parallelism) in favor of new ones (e.g., extrapolation).
