Abstract

"The music of the aulos was notoriously versatile and therefore especially “good to think with” and express through myth. The myth of Marsyas is the most important aulos-myth. However, it is primaly know from late mythographic treatments. The study of Greek art allows to achieve a more nuanced and contextualized understanding of the many and multiple meanings and the historic-geographic development and variations of this myth and other aulos-myths, which are substantial.
