New Material of the Platychelyid Turtle Notoemys zapatocaensis from the Early Cretaceous of Colombia; Implications for Understanding Pleurodira Evolution

Notoemys zapatocaensis is the youngest representative of the Platychelyidae, a group of Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous pleurodires. Here we describe two new specimens of this species represented by a partial carapace and a nearly complete articulated shell. Notoemys zapatocaensis is different from other platychelyid turtles in having: (1) two fairly reduced lateral tuberosities on the margin of the anterior plastral lobe, (2) a shallow notch on the posterolateral margin of the epiplastra, giving a convex posterolateral edge to this bone, (3) gular scales that are rectangular in shape and much wider than long, (4) a long intergular scale that has a slight medial contact with the pectorals, resulting in a complete separation of the humeral scales, (5) a central plastral fontanelle that projects posteriorly into the xiphiplastral region, (6) a very small marginal 3, (7) a slightly shorter neural 1 than neural 2, with an exclusive lateral contact with costal 1, resulting in a complete separation of neural 2 and costal 1, (8) narrower vertebral scales, and (9) peripheral 3 lacking a posteromedial contact with costal 2. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that N. zapatocaensis is a sister taxon of N. oxfordiensis, and that Proterochersis robusta can be resolved in two different positions in the testudines tree: (1) with Odontochelys semitestacea based on the fact that both taxa share two mesoplastra meeting at midline, or (2) as the most basal pleurodire, based on a suture articulation of pelvis to shell. Anal notch shape and potentially fontanelle size are indicators of sexual dimorphism in platychelyids.

An almost complete side-necked turtle shell (Pelomedusoides, Bothremydidae) from the Maria Farinha Formation (Paleogene, Paleocene), Paraíba Basin, NE Brazil

Background. Pelomedusoides turtles are an important group in extant fauna of northern South America, Africa and Madagascar, which have a long fossil record, with numerous records through the Cretaceous, Paleogene, and Neogene in South America. One of high- diversified clade of this linage is Bothremydidae, and its record extends from Early Cretaceous (Barreminan) to Eocene. So far, no named species from the Paleocene of Brazil were described. The single Paleocene record is a peripheral bone associated to pelomedusoid turtle from the Maria Farinha Formation (Danian), of Pernambuco State. A carapace and posterior plastral lobe from the early Cretaceous Valanginian of northeastern Colombia is a new species of the pleurodire Notoemys. It is a pleurodire based on the sutured pelvis and xiphiplastral notch. Notoemys zapatocaensis, n.sp., differs from the other two species of Notoemys, N. oxfordiensis and N. laticentralis, in having a slightly serrated posterior margin, a very small third peripheral, no contact of costal 1 and peripheral 3, and protuberances developed on the pleural and vertebral scale areas.

Freshwater turtles (Testudines: Pleurodira) in the Upper Cretaceous of Chilean Patagonia

We describe remains of freshwater turtles from the Upper Cretaceous of Chilean Patagonia. The fossils, which comprise isolated shell fragments and incomplete appendicular bones, were recovered from meandering fluvial deposits of the Dorotea Formation (upper Campanian–Danian), in the Río de Las Chinas Valley, Magallanes region. These remains represent the first records of Upper Cretaceous pan-chelid pleurodiran turtles in the Magallanes-Austral Basin. The shell fragments show a strong ornamentation of irregular polygons distributed over their entire external surface, and one of the peripheral plates is narrow and elongated. These features are consistent with traits described in Yaminuechelys, a chelid genus from the Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene of Argentinian Patagonia. The first fossil skull of Chelus (Pleurodira: Chelidae, Matamata turtle) from the early Miocene of Colombia

Here we describe the first fossil skull so far known for the turtle genus Chelus from the early Miocene (~ 16 m.y.), Castilletes Formation, Alta Guajira Peninsula, Cocinetas basin, Colombia. The skull is partially preserved, including most of the basicranium (pteygoid-bassioccipital bones) and the roof elements including the parietal, pterygoid and portions of the squamosal, supraoccipital and the most dorsal quadrate. The skull is preserved in three dimensions, without evidence of crushing, allowing the observa- tion of the internal braincase morphology using microcomputer tomography. Compari- sons with the skull of the only extant species for the genus Chelus fimbriata (Matamata turtle) allow us to conclude that for the last 16 million years the morphology of the skull for this genus has remained almost unvarying, with only a slightly higher compression of the most anterior braincase exhibited by the extant species. Due to its fragmentary condition, a more refined identification beyond the genus (Chelus sp.) is not possible; however, the overall skull design indicates that the fossil species could also have had the same ecological and dietary adaptations as its extant relative.

A new platychelyid turtle (Pan-Pleurodira) from the Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian) of Oaxaca, Mexico

Until recently, the record of Mesozoic turtles in Mexico has been restricted to the Cretaceous. New discoveries in the Sabinal Formation (Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca) have extended the record into the Kimmeridgian (Late Jurassic). The Sabinal Formation is part of the Tlaxiaco Basin, which was a depocenter of continental and marine sediments dominated by transgressive-regressive marine conditions during the Jurassic-Cretaceous. The new turtle described here consists of an almost complete carapace associated with a plastron. Based on the unique combination of characters, this turtle is identified as a new species of Platychelyidae here named Notoemys tlaxiacoensis. Platychelyid characters in this specimen include the presence of the sulcus between vertebral 3 and 4 located on neural 6, the presence of a central plastral fontanelle, and a pair of reduced mesoplastra. The occurrence of Kimmeridgian platychelyids in Mexico confirms that the Hispanic Corridor acted as a connection between Tethyan and Palaeopacific faunas.

Recent studies suggested that many fossil marine turtles might not be closely related to extant marine turtles (Chelonioidea). The uncertainty surrounding the origin and phylogenetic position of fossil marine turtles impacts our understanding of turtle evolution and complicates our attempts to develop and justify fossil calibrations for molecular divergence dating. Here we present the description and phylogenetic analysis of a new fossil marine turtle from the Lower Cretaceous (upper Barremian-lower Aptian, >120 Ma) of Colombia that has a minimum age that is >25 million years older than the minimum age of the previously recognized oldest chelonioid. This new fossil taxon, Desmatochelys padillai sp. nov., is represented by a nearly complete skeleton, four additional skulls with articulated lower jaws, and two partial shells. Unusual shell anatomy and osteohistology in a new Late Cretaceous panchelid turtle from northwestern Patagonia, Argentina

Rionegrochelys caldieroi de la Fuente, Maniel, and Jannello gen. et sp. nov. is a Late Cretaceous turtle from Rio Negro Province, Argentina. The holotype and the referred specimens of this new species show an unusual shell morphology and microanatomy. The proportion between the carapace and plastron and the peculiar morphology of the shell such as the heart shaped carapace, a very deep nuchal notch, peripheral bones 2-11 with strongly gutter, the first vertebral scute twice as wide as long and subrectangular in shape, the posterior margin of vertebral scute 5 is three lobe shaped, and the unexpected osteohistology characterized by a massive structure, with higher compactness (80.6%) than other chelids, suggests beyond doubt that this turtle may be considered a new taxon. A semi-aquatic habitat with tendency towards terrestrial environments is inferred for Rionegrochelys caldieroi similar to that of the extant pelomedusid Pelomedusa subrufa among the extant pleurodires. Rionegrochelys caldieroi is recovered as a stem chelid. This new species seems to be closely related to Bonapartemys bajobarrealis and the clade formed by Lomalatachelys neuquina plus Mendozachelys wichmanni.
