Symptoms associated with impaired gastric emptying of solids and liquids in functional dyspepsia (original) (raw)

2003, The American journal of gastroenterology

The relationship between functional dyspepsia and delayed gastric emptying of solids or liquids is still unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate in dyspeptic patients the prevalence of delayed gastric emptying for solids or for liquids and to investigate the relationship to the dyspepsia symptom pattern. In 392 and 330 patients with functional dyspepsia, the solid and liquid gastric emptying, respectively, was measured using breath tests, and the severity of eight dyspeptic symptoms was scored. Gastric emptying of solids and liquids were delayed in 23% and 35% of the patients. Multivariate analysis showed that the presence of vomiting and postprandial fullness was associated with delayed solid emptying (OR 2.65, 95% CI = 1.62-4.35 and OR 3.08, 95% CI = 1.28-9.16, respectively). Postprandial fullness was also associated with the risk of delayed liquid emptying when symptom was present (OR 3.5, 95% CI = 1.57-8.68), relevant or severe (OR 2.504, 95% CI = 1.41-4.65), an...

Role of gastric emptying in functional dyspepsia: a scintigraphic study of 94 subjects

Digestive diseases and sciences, 1998

Many physiological factors can alter gastric emptying, and the role of gastric emptying in functional dyspepsia is controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of different factors (age, sex, the degree of dyspeptic and irritable bowel symptoms, lactase deficiency, smoking habits, the use of antiinflammatory drugs, and H. pylori gastritis) on gastric emptying in patients with functional dyspepsia. The study population consisted of 83 patients with functional dyspepsia and 11 control subjects who underwent a standardized scintigraphic examination to study gastric emptying. This study detected no difference in gastric emptying between different subgroups with functional dyspepsia. There was, however, a slight tendency for delayed gastric emptying among patients with functional dyspepsia compared to controls. Intragastric distribution of the solid content was more distally located in smokers, and the solid lagtime was prolonged among antiinflammatory drug users. The g...

Prevalence of Gastric Motility Disorders in Patients with Functional Dyspepsia

Journal of neurogastroenterology and motility, 2017

Gastric motility abnormalities have been considered to be pathophysiological features of functional dyspepsia (FD) that are closely related to dyspepsia symptoms, especially postprandial distress syndrome (PDS). The aims of this study are to (1) investigate the prevalence of gastric motility disorders and (2) evaluate the association between gastric motility abnormalities and dyspeptic symptoms using gastric scintigraphy in the PDS type of FD. Forty healthy subjects and 94 PDS type FD patients were enrolled in the study. The volunteers and patients ingested a radiolabeled (technetium-99m) solid test meal, and scintigraphic images were recorded. Gastric accommodation and emptying were assessed by scintigraphic imaging. The patients' dyspeptic symptoms were also explored using self-completed symptom questionnaires with 10 variables (4 scales, 0-3 points) at the same time. In 94 Japanese FD patients, the prevalence of impaired gastric accommodation and delayed emptying were 14.9% (...

Gastric emptying and intragastric distribution of a solid meal in functional dyspepsia: influence of gender and anxiety

Journal of clinical gastroenterology, 2004

Gastric dysmotility and psychological factors have been implicated in the pathophysiology of functional dyspepsia. To investigate the influence of gender and anxiety on gastric emptying and intragastric food distribution in patients with functional dyspepsia. A standard gastric emptying test was used to study total and compartmental gastric emptying of a solid meal in 22 patients with functional dyspepsia (16 women). Comparisons of the data for dyspeptic men and women were made with 2 respective subgroups of controls (9 men; 9 women). The presence of anxiety and depression was assessed by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. Delayed gastric emptying was observed in 32% of patients with functional dyspepsia. As a group, dyspeptic women had a significantly longer half-emptying time as compared with dyspeptic men ( 19 +/- 41 min vs. 78 +/- 22 min) and to female controls (96 +/- 17 min). There was no difference in half-emptying times between male patients and controls. The initial...
