A Review of Vortex Tube Refrigeration System

Refrigeration plays an important role in developing countries, primarily for the preservation of food, medicine, and for air conditioning. Conventional refrigeration systems are using Freon as refrigerant. As they are the main cause for depletion of ozone layer, extensive research work is going on alternate refrigeration systems. Vortex tube is a non conventional cooling device, having no moving parts which will produce cold air and hot air from the source of compressed air without affecting the environment. When a high pressure air is tangentially injected into vortex chamber a strong vortex flow will be created which will be split into two air streams, one hot stream and the other is cold stream at its ends. Vortex tube is one of the non-conventional type refrigerating systems for the production of refrigeration. It is a simple device for producing low temperatures. Vortex tube is a simple energy separating device which is compact and simple to produce and to operate. This paper represents the experimentation of the Vortex Tube Refrigeration system. Vortex tube also is known as Ranque-Hilsch Vortex tube. A Vortex Tube is a Mechanical Device, which generates cold and hot streams from a single injection of pressurized gas. Without any moving parts or chemical reaction within the tube, the intersecting phenomenon of energy separation results only from fluid dynamic effects. The Control valve is a screw located at the hot end and cold end with thread on it which is used to restrict the flow of air due to which the small forced vortex takes place after stagnation point and free vortex getaway through the hot end as hot air and cold end as cold air. At the other end, a small orifice plate is located to further reduce the temperature Drop. The 2.5 HP compressors are used for experimentation for low pressures. Also, for higher pressures, it is difficult with a low capacity compressor to get accurate results. For this purpose, a model has been developed using experimental data to predict the results for the pressure range of 1to 6 bar. We have attached the Thermo-electric module to the system to generate electricity without affecting the efficiency of the system.

A vortex tube works as a splitter of compressed gas stream bifurcating it into a hot and a cold stream without putting into use any chemical reaction or any external source of energy. This work focuses on variable geometries at the "hot end side" which are subjected to variable inlet parameters and the outcome of such an experiment is discussed. Hot end plugs have been employed to achieve the results. Three vortex tubes were designed, fabricated and tested for maximum temperature drop. A detailed experimental analysis has been worked upon to detail out the behaviour of the vortex tube. A suitably designed test rig has been helpful in investigating the role of geometrical parameters such as the angle of the inline conical valve, tip diameter of the inline conical valve.

The vortex tube's construction is such that it is made up of a hollow tube of either metallic or fibre components having a nozzle for letting in of compressed air and a diaphragm or a orifice for controlling the flow rate of air. When compressed air passes through a nozzle into the diaphragm of the vortex tube, the air forms a spiral shaped vortex, that causes the heating up of air, and when this air returns back, it cools down rapidly, producing a cooling effect. The main study in the Vortex tube is the study of the temperature distribution of the rotating air. This effect was first discovered by Ranque and later by Hilsch and hence this effect is called Ranque-Hilsch effect.

Fabrication and Experimental Analysis of Vortex Tube by Varying the Geometry and Material

To avoid this damage extensive research work is going on alternate refrigeration systems. Vortex tube (VT) is non-conventional cooling equipment, without moving parts which are capable of separating hot air stream and cold air stream form an inlet air stream with desired pressure without affecting the environment. This device suits for vital applications due to its light weight, simple and more importantly it is compact.

DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND PERFORMANCE TEST OF A VORTEX TUBE COOLING SYSTEM CONSTRUCTED BY LOCALLY AVAILABLE MATERIALS

A cooling system is very important for both man and machine. In general vapor compression refrigeration system and vapor absorption refrigeration system are used for refrigeration purpose. Vortex tube cooling system is a non conventional type of cooling system which is not used widely for cooling purpose. But it has many advantages over the conventional cooling system. In this project attempt has been made to construct a vortex tube with locally available materials. Effects of the number of inlet tangential nozzles, the tube diameter, and the diameter of the inlet nozzle on the temperature reduction in the tube were experimentally investigated. Throughout the project several number of vortex tubes were constructed by locally available materials like PVC pipe for performance test. The temperature drops of the cold air obtained from these experiments were not in good agreement with available data for comparison at a similar scale of separating conditions. The experimental results showed that the vortex tube with two inlet nozzles and cold tube diameter 12.7 mm yielded the highest temperature reduction which was found 4 .

The vortex tube is a simple device used in industry for generation of cold and hot air streams from a single compressed air supply. This simple device is very efficient in separation of air streams of different temperatures. Any fluid (air) that flows and rotates about an axis such as a tornado, is called a vortex. A vortex tube creates a vortex and separates it into two air streams-one hot and one cold. Figure shows how a vortex tube works. Compressed air enters a cylindrical chamber which causes the air to spiral. At the end of the hot tube, a small portion of this air exits through a needle valve as hot air. The remaining air is forced back through the center of the cylindrical tube. This super-cooled air flows through the center of the generator and exits through the cold port and is the required part of our project.
