The Epidemiologic Characterization of Individuals Newly Reported with HIV-Infection in South Carolina, May 2004 to April 2005 (original) (raw)
Abstract
Background: In 2004, South Carolina (SC) ranked 10th in annual AIDS case rates in the US. In January 2004, SC law mandated the reporting of all HIV viral loads and CD4+ T cell counts to the HARS Surveillance Database. However, there has been no recent characterization of the HIV-infected population using these values. Methods: We used initial CD4counts and viral loads to assess disease stage at the time of diagnosis. All incident cases between May 1 2004 and April 30 2005, who had laboratory values reported, were analyzed using SAS. Stratification of CD4 count and viral load were according to current established guidelines for commencing ART (CD4 <= 350 cells/mm3 and viral load >= 100,000 copies/ml) or initiation of opportunistic infection prophylaxis (CD4 <= 200 cells/mm3). Results: Of 759 individuals who had a CD4 count reported, 56% and 34% had CD4 counts <= 350 and <= 200 cells/mm3, respectively, at initial HIV diagnosis. Compared to those with CD4 counts >200 ...
