The formation of ethnic identity in the arena of local political economy is important to be studied in order to understand the reality of pluralism in Indonesia. The objective of this paper is to study the formation of ethnic identity in the arena of local political economy. The study uses qualitative methodology of non-positivistic paradigm with structuralismconstructivism perspective. The unit of analysis of this study is actor who is located in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, structured interviews and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) of actors of ethnic backgrounds (Tolaki, Muna, Buton, and Bugis) and various professions (politicians, bureaucracy, academia, and NGO activists). limited ethnic identity formation. Both of the structures are determinants of the actors' practices in the arena of political economy. Double hierarchy principles (the principle of hierarchy of heteronomous and autonomous hierarchy) contributes to the formation of ethnic identity, which cause ethnic mobilization [identity], positive or negative.
