Analysis of the Relationship between University Students' Problematic Internet Use and Loneliness

The computer is part of the information and communication age, and the Internet today is the most used communication tool. Studies have shown that there is a relationship between problematic Internet use and loneliness. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between problematic Internet use sub-scales and loneliness. In this study, data were collected from the college students at an Anatolian University in Turkey. The participants of this study consisted of 392 undergraduates. Of the participants, 43% are male (n = 167) and 57% female (n = 225). The average age for the participants is 22 years old. The Problematic Internet Use Scale and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale were used as data collection instruments. In the present study, structural equation modeling (SEM) procedures are used to explore the relationships that exist among the variables. The findings of the study revealed that while university students’ social benefit/social comfort of Internet has a direct effect on their excessive Internet use and negative consequences, it is related to the loneliness level indirectly. In addition, it is seen in the research model that with an increase in the negative consequences of the Internet, the loneliness level was raised. Another result from the study is that when university students’ excessive Internet use increased, their loneliness level decreased.

Levels of Internet addiction and loneliness among students (Case study: The students of Universities of center of Golestan Province)

Objective: The Internet, as a social tool is a small part of research on virtual communication and loneliness. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the difference between levels of Internet addiction and loneliness. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted using descriptive survey method. The population of this study was the students of the universities of Golestan, who number was 16532. To determine the size of sample, 385 people were determined by volume estimation method according to Krejces & Morgan table. A proportional stratified random sampling method was used to select samples. Results: Findings of the research indicate that there is a significant negative relationship between loneliness and levels of internet addiction, as with increasing levels of Internet addiction, the feeling of loneliness is reduced. Loneliness and Internet Addiction Among University Students

The present study was designed to determine the relationship between loneliness and Internet addiction, based on a sample of young generation from Turkey. Participants in this study were students of the Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey (n = 440). Findings show that there is a statistically significant relationship (p <0.05) between students’ Internet addiction and only the grade they are studying. According to the correlation analysis, it was found that there is a negative relationship between the loneliness of students and the time they spend on the internet, and a positive relationship between internet addiction and age of students. Moreover, it was found that the age, time spent on the Internet and loneliness of university students were important determinants of Internet addiction.

Internet Addiction and Loneliness Among Students of University of Shkodra

Internet addiction is a kind of consumer behavior that has attracted the attention of many studies. Loneliness is a frequently reported mental illness addicted to the internet. Lonely individuals may be drawn online because of the increased potential for companionship, the changed social interaction patterns online, and as a way to modulate negative moods associated with loneliness. This study examines the relationship between internet addiction and loneliness among albanian students of University of Shkodra and the gender differences to this aspect. The participants to the research were 151 students from 18-23 years old, who live in different places of North Albania. In order to trace the connection between loneliness and Internet addiction among students was used the self-administered questionnaires: Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and UCLA Loneliness Scale. The research has shown that there is a mild negative correlation between loneliness and Internet addiction, on the other hand no gender differences was found in terms of internet addiction and loneliness level. The results suggest that students addicted to the Internet have significantly lower rates of loneliness.

Problematic Internet Use and Psychological Problems (Depression and Loneliness) Among Tanta University Students

In the last few years, Problematic Internet Use has become a serious mental health problem, particularly among the young people between ten and twenty-six years old. The earliest and recent studies reported link between overuse of the internet by adolescent and young adults and negative effect of psychological wellbeing. Aim of the study: This study aimed to investigate the extent of Problematic Internet usage among Tanta university students and examine the relationships between Problematic Internet Use and depression and loneliness among Tanta university students. Design: The study followed the descriptive design. Setting:-Different faculties of Tanta University. Subject: The target population of this study consisted of 300 participants who were chosen randomly among Tanta university students. Tools: In the collection of data of this study, Internet Addiction test (IAT), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)and UCLA loneliness scale have been used. Result: Findings have demonstrated that about one third of the participants can be characterized as '' Problematic Internet Use. Additionally, there is positive significant relationship among Problematic Internet Use and depression and loneliness in which the studied university students who have a higher frequency of Internet usage are more likely to be lonely and depressed. Recommendation: The study recommended that it should be given more attention to educate students about internet usage habits and psychologists must be aware of this newly emerging disorder as a internet addiction and they should be able to apply the appropriate therapeutic interventions .

A Comparative Study of Problematic Internet Use and Loneliness among Turkish and Korean Prospective Teachers

The main aim of this study is to compare the problematic internet use and its relation to loneliness among two nations' prospective teachers, Turkey and South Korea. Five hundred and ninety five prospective teachers from three universities, two from Turkey and one from South Korea participated in the study. Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 and UCLA Loneliness Scale were used to collect data. Some of the major findings are as follows: a) No differences were found between the problematic Internet use of Turkish and Korean prospective teachers; b) Male Turkish prospective teachers found to have more problematic use of internet than female counterparts on the other hand no differences were found among South Korean prospective teachers by means of sex; c) Positive but low correlations between problematic Internet use and loneliness levels of prospective teachers of both nations; d) There is a significant difference between Turkish and Korean prospective teachers. South Korean prospective teachers were found to be in higher levels of loneliness than Turkish counterparts.

Problematic Internet use, loneliness and dating anxiety among young adult university students

The Internet, an important modern means of obtaining information and establishing communication with others, has become an increasingly essential element of human life. Although Internet use makes life easier, it can become problematic in the event of non-functional use. Debate and research into whether Internet addiction is a cause or an effect are continuing. This study investigates problematic Internet use among young adult university students and examines correlation between problematic Internet use and loneliness and dating anxiety. University student Internet use patterns are also investigated. The study was conducted among 493 students from the Karadeniz Technical University Fatih Faculty of Education. The Online Cognition Scale, Dating Anxiety Scale, Loneliness Scale and Personal Information Questionnaire were employed in the collection of data. Pearson correlation analysis, the t-test, one-way analysis of variance and chi-square test were used for data analysis. The Pearson correlation analysis results reveal a significant positive correlation between problematic Internet use and loneliness (r ¼ 0.194, p < 0.001), communication anxiety (r ¼ 0.15, p < 0.001), unpopularity anxiety (r ¼ 0.174, p < 0.001) and physiological symptoms (r ¼ 0.125, p < 0.001) dating anxiety sub-scales. Oneway analysis of variance was used to examine whether problematic Internet use varies according to length of Internet use, and a significantly high level of problematic Internet use was observed among those going online for more than 5 h a day compared to other users (F ¼ 14.327, p < 0.001). Chi-square results reveal a significant association between length of Internet use and how students feel when they do not go online (chi-square ¼ 116.543, p < 0.001). The t-test was used to determine whether there was a significant difference in levels of Internet use according to gender, and levels of problematic Internet use were significantly higher among male students than females (t ¼ 4.046, p < 0.001).

A Comparison of the Loneliness Levels of Turkish University Students in Terms of Internet Use

The objective of this research was to compare the loneliness levels of Turkish university students in terms of Internet use. This was a descriptive and comparative study involving a total of 525 students in Izmir, 258 female and 267 male, who participated voluntarily. The instruments were the personal information form and the UCLA loneliness scale, and a t-test was use to compare the data. The results revealed that loneliness points were significantly higher for students who preferred the Internet rather than being with friends (t 519 = 6. 013, p = .001 and those who preferred social chats online rather than their actual friends (t 519 = 5. 666, p = .001). The loneliness level was higher for those who cannot postpone their Internet use (t 520 = 1.704, p = .089) and those who could not give up Internet use (t 521 = .126, p = .900); however, a significant relationship was not found. This study reiterates the importance of Internet use or online computer hours for students, and the importance of media literacy training. To cope with loneliness, students need to bond with their peers, establish more fulfilling relationships, and develop their social skills. Schools on should place importance social skills training, effective communication skills, and art and cultural activities. It is essential to have some strategies to prevent Internet addiction.

Internet Addiction: It's Relation with Loneliness Among Undergraduate Students of South-Punjab, Pakistan

The current research aims to explain the excessive use of internet as becomes internet addiction and its relation with loneliness. The sample of (N =1020) undergraduates from Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan (BZU) and The Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) were taken, including 255 male and 255 female from each university. A-Priori sample size was calculated to estimate minimum sample size that was 974 to remove biasness; I was taken twenty three respondents additionally from each university. There were two questionnaires used for measuring variables that were Chen Internet Addiction Scale, and UCLA Loneliness Scale was employed. Cross-sectional survey research design was used. PREDICTIVE EFFECTS OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, INTERNET USE DURATION, LONELINESS AND SHYNESS ON INTERNET ADDICTION

This study investigated whether internet addiction is related to gender, academic achievement, duration of internet use, loneliness and shyness. The study was carried out with 206 adolescents aged between 15-18 years (X=16.50) and studying public high schools. 55.8% (115) of the participant students are female and 44.2% (91) are male. To collect data, the “Personal Information Form” developed by the researchers, the “Internet Addiction Scale” developed by Young (1998), the “UCLA Loneliness Scale” developed by Russel, Peplau and Cutrona (1980), and the “Shyness Scale” developed by Cheek and Buss (1981) were used. The results indicated that internet addiction changed according to gender, academic achievement and duration of internet use. Moreover, while academic achievement significantly and negatively predicted internet addiction, duration of internet use and shyness significantly and positively predicted internet addiction. However, the variables of gender and loneliness were found to have no significant effects on internet addiction.
