Types of entrepreneurs and firms: The case of new Spanish firms
Strategic Management Journal, 1989
The main purpose of this paper is to present an empirical analysis of the sequence relating the performance of the firm to its behavior, which in turn depends upon the origin and personal characteristics of the entrepreneurs. The data are drawn from new Spanish firms. A typology of new entrepreneurs is constructed, based on their basic work aspirations. Each type of entrepreneur is then examined, in terms of the origin and personal characteristics of the members of the class. The results of the study show that significant differences exist among the entrepreneurs and firms of each type, especially in terms of the size of the firm (number of employees) and its evolution over time. The implications of these results, for the theory of entrepreneurship and for the design of policies towards the creation of new firms, are then derived. I Especially during its first stages. This research line has recently attracted a large number of scholars. See, for example, Kimberley and Miles (1980) and Quinn and Cameron (1983). Two representative literature references are Storey (1982) and Greffe (1984).
Some Characteristics of the New Enterprises and the Profile of New Entrepreneurs
Revista De Management Comparat International Review of International Comparative Management, 2009
By "newly founded" we refer to the REGIS registration -national register of the foundation of a new entity: commercial company, or individual entrepreneur in non-agricultural activities. Certainly, the "new enterprises are from the SMEs category" for the big enterprises usually come from divisions, fusions, or growths in time of the middle-sized ones.
Introducción: El Proceso De Creación De Empresas
2008
Entrepreneurship is considered to be an important mechanism for economic development through employment, innovation and welfare effects. The papers in this special issue are from the 3 rd Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Research Conference held in Washington D.C. in 2007. The introduction has three objectives. First, to discuss the importance of the three stages of economic development, the factor-driven stage, the efficiency-driven stage and the innovation-driven stage. Second, to examine the empirical evidence on the relationship between stages of economic development and entrepreneurship. Third, to present a summary of the papers.
Exploring the innovative potential of SMEs in Spain
Transfer: European Review of Labour and Research, 16 (2): 197-209., 2010
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) tend to be theoretically and empirically considered to have critical limitations for innovation and technological development. Whereas this can be true in general terms, there are certain factors that can stimulate SMEs' capacity for innovation, in particular internal organizational factors. Thus, in the context of less formally institutionalized regional/ local labour markets and labour relations, several factors or drivers, such as adequate size, the specific industrial sector and good human resources management, can be potential drivers of learning and innovation. These factors are analysed in three main dimensions, namely, management, further training and work organization. These arguments are explored with examples and data from industrial SMEs in their respective regional contexts in Spain.
An Explanation of the Life Span of New French Firms
Small Business Economics, 2000
In contrast to previous studies on firm survival which tend to focus on features related to the structure of the firms and their area of activity, our aim here is to widen the perspective usually adopted in the field, taking into account a larger and more qualitative set of variables. Among these variables, features related to the individual characteristics of the entrepreneur, to the context of entrepreneurship and to the insertion in entrepreneurial networks are significant to explain the life span of new firms. The empirical material is drawn from two surveys, which provide detailed data about a group of new firms created in France in 1994 and closed down before 1997 or still running in 1997. Our empirical approach on qualitative data is based on data analysis methods (linear discriminant analysis, barycentric discriminant analysis, analysis of variance). According to the characteristics of the entrepreneur, the main explanatory factors for the survival of new firms are the fact that they are entrepreneurs who have taken over firms, that they have acquired during their previous occupational activity an experience in the same branch of activity and that they experience a successful integration into the entrepreneurial networks. These three factors show that the survival of young firms is indirectly conditioned by the existence of an initial custom, by the mastery of a job and by the know-how in the entrepreneurial function.
Investigaciones Regionales Journal of Regional Research, 2013
This paper explores the contribution of a selection of elements representative of human capital and perception as determinants of entrepreneurship in different stages of the economic cycle. The results confirm the significance of selfefficacy, the perception of opportunities, and the fear of failure, and highlight the importance of personal knowledge of entrepreneurs. They remain influential in different economic times in which their analyses have been replicated, although some differences are felt that point to, in contraction periods, a loss of influence of the confidence in one's own abilities, compared to an increase in the case of judgment on the existence of opportunities in the environment, and in the case of the presence of entrepreneurs in the surrounding context. In contrast, the behavior of the fear of failure, as a barrier to entrepreneurship, remains unchanged in an adverse context with respect to a positive context due to reduced opportunity costs.
