This paper stresses the transformations of early medieval society in Central Catalonia, taking the vanishing of the roman rural settlement pattern, the villae, as a starting point. Integrating data available, this study characterizes the new settlement patterns and the territorial organization as well. Moreover, we also offer an interpretation about the consequences of the Islamic conquest and, specially, about the special legal status of the Central Catalonia territories, which remained, during the ninth century, in a regime of partial autonomy in front of the political powers surrounding them. Finally, we describe, with both archeological and written data, the conquest and integration process of these territories to the Christian counties, in accordance to the power sites, as castles, towers or churches, but also to the peasant settlements and their productive facilities.
