Multivariate analysis of abundance and distribution of fish species in coast of Ghana, West Africa
Research in Agriculture Livestock and Fisheries
Marine fishes are currently experiencing population decline which has severe repercussions on food security, especially in fishing households. However, without assessing the distribution and abundance of these marine fishes, ensuring sustainable management will become impossible. Therefore, the study aimed at applying multivariate techniques to determine the biodiversity of fishes along the coast of Ahanta West, Ghana. Fish samples were collected daily through experimental fishing from November-December, 2011. Data obtained from the study were analyzed for ecological indices, species diversity, and community structure using PAST and PRIMER v6 software. From the results, Pteroscion peli (19.2%), Galeoides decadactylus (11.7%), and Brachydeuterus auritus (9.0%) were the dominant fishes. Multivariate analysis identified three main assemblages of fishes, at 18%. For the ecological indices, the species dominance index (SDI) ranged from 0.89 to 0.93, which indicated that the fish species ...
Abundance, biomass and species composition of nearshore fish assemblages in Ghana, West Africa
Many of the world’s fish populations are overexploited, including Ghana’s fish resources. This study examines spatio-temporal trends in fish species composition in relation to biotic, abiotic and anthropogenic factors, towards achieving better-informed management of the beach-seine fisheries. Fishery-dependent data were collected between November 1999 and October 2001 from 94 beach-seine hauls fished at two stations along the Ghanaian coast. The catch consisted of fish, crustaceans, other invertebrates, and macroalgae. Generally, juveniles of species that are exploited by offshore fisheries were found in the catches. Species abundance and their occurrence generally peaked between November and January. Duration of solar radiation and tide level appeared to be important predictors of fish biomass. It is important to exploit the nearshore fish assemblage sustainably because of its nursery role. A co-managed (fishers and government) three-month ban on beach-seining (between May and July) is recommended as the most appropriate control measure towards the sustainability of Ghanaian fish stocks.

To broaden knowledge of the importance of estuaries to fisheries and encourage their management, this research investigated the influence of diurnal tides and other physicochemical factors on the assemblage and diversity of fish fauna in the Pra estuary in Ghana; an estuary highly silted by illegal gold mining activities. Fish species composition, diversity and size distribution together with salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO) and turbidity were studied monthly at high and low tides from February 2012 to December 2013. Fish were caught using a cast net while physico-chemical parameters were recorded using water quality checker. Data were analyzed for fish numerical composition, length range, modal sizes and monthly Shannon-Wiener diversity along with monthly trends of physico-chemical factors. A total of 2310 fish belonging to 38 species from 22 families comprising finfishes and shellfishes of marine, brackishwater and freshwater sources were sampled. Majority were juveniles of commerc...
Species Composition, Abundance, and Growth of Three Common Fish Species of the Volta Estuary, Ghana
There is growing concern over observed declines in fish catch and therefore catch rate in coastal water bodies in Ghana which have been attributed, in part, to changes in the environment and excessive pressure on exploited fish populations. This research examined biological performance measures (abundance and growth) of estuarine fish under varying physico–chemical factors such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH. Experimental fishing with seine net was done while specified water quality parameters were also collected simultaneously on a monthly basis for eight months in three identified salinity zones of the Volta estuary. The results indicated that temperature and salinity caused most variation in fish abundance. There were a total of 2,333 individual fishes caught in the survey. Most species examined were juveniles of marine migrants; these species ranged from 2.5 to 10 cm. This reinforces the fact that the estuarine environment serves as breeding and nursery ground for a number of fishes. The dominant fish species by number encountered were Caranx hippos, Mugil cephalus and Ethmalosa fimbriata. Fish growth was estimated using length-weight relationships and condition factor. The von Bertalanffy growth function determined for the dominant fishes indicated slow growth. Precautionary management measures should be implemented to regulate their exploitation to help sustain fish populations in the estuary and the adjacent freshwater and marine environments.
Influence of Environmental Factors and Fishing Effort on Demersal Fish Species in Ghana
2018
Separating effects of fishing from responses of environmental factors is a key problem for fisheries scientists. I used data from fishery-independent trawl surveys (6 years data from 1999 – 2016) to test influences of fishing effort and environmental factors (temperature, oxygen salinity) on the abundance and spatial distribution of two species groups: 5 economically important species and 3 non-commercial species on the continental shelf of Ghana. Fishing effort, measured for the entire study area, affected year-to-year changes in the abundance of all but one species (5 species negatively, 2 positively, and 1 species unaffected). All species also showed significant spatio-temporal associations with temperature, salinity and oxygen levels. There was some year-to-year consistency in spatial distributions because each of these environmental variables was correlated with depth. Nonetheless, some inter-annual changes in species distribution appeared to reflect tracking of year-to-year sh...

The increased human activities resulting from industrialization and urbanization around the Ondo section of the coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean have significantly affected the environment. To this end, the water quality, fish abundance and target status of fish species were identified, not-withstanding the influence of human activities on the water quality and its effects on fish abundance. Four fishing communities were purposively selected based on geographical location and accessibility along the coast; Ayetoro and Idi-Ogba communities on the eastern side and Eruna-Ero and Igbokoda on the western side. A total of 120 structured questionnaires were randomly administered using snowball technique at 30 per site. Erunna-Ero community measured the highest mean temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity and conductivity with 29.39 0.30 oC, 4.48 0.06 mg/L,10.68 0.39ppt and 40.70 0.18 S/cmrespectively, while pH was highest in Idi-Ogba community (6.47 0.00). A total of 61.67% were within...
