Knowledge and Hydration Status Among Adolescent in Surabaya

Background/Aims: Dehydration is a condition where there is a lack of fluid in the body that can impact body endurance. This research aimed to describe the prevalence of dehydration among adolescents and factors related to it. Methods: A total of 66 students aged 12–15 years old from Grade 7 and Grade 8 of Junior High School Muhammadiyah 4 Gadung Surabaya were recruited. Subjects were interviewed to assess their knowledge level, physical activity level (PAL), and water intake. Dehydration status was measured using a self assessment method called Periksa Urin Sendiri (PURI), by comparing their urine color to a chart developed by Armstrong. An independent t-test was performed to see the difference in mean water intake between subjects according to their knowledge level. Results: It was found that 79% of the subjects had low knowledge regarding required water intake, 97% subjects were physically inactive, 67% consumed water less than the guideline, and 67% of them were dehydrated. There was no significant difference in terms of water intake between both groups, although subjects with higher knowledge used to drink more water than those with lower knowledge. Conclusions: It is necessary to educate adolescents at school to improve their knowledge and water intake

The study analysed the pattern of water consumption among students in Cross River University, Calabar Campus, Nigeria. Specifically, the study examine the extent and ways water is consumed. Data for the study were obtained using interviews, observations and questionnaire.in eliciting data. A total of 300 copies of questionnaire were distributed in the residential hostels. In order to have a general impression of the situation under investigation, 150 copies of questionnaire were distributed in male hostels and same were distributed in female hostels. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, simple percentages and means. A 5-point likert scale was used in understanding the level in which certain variables contribute in water consumption in the study area. Insufficient and inappropriate daily fluid intake in a long period may have adverse effect on human's health. Therefore, the present study evaluated the amounts and sources of fluids consumed by university students to determine whether these amounts and sources of fluid were enough and appropriate. In this descriptive study, 245 (142 females and 103 males) volunteer students of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in 2009 were recruited. Food and fluid intake of subjects were as-sessed by 24-hour recall method of 3 days (two week days and one week- end included). Dietary intake of subjects was analyzed by Nutritionist III software program. Water Consumption and its Determinants Among Women in Ghana: 2008 Demographic and Health Survey
Water is one of the most critical nutrients for humans in ensuring good health and well-being. Interestingly, majority of the vulnerable subpopulations of women in Ghana do not meet the daily recommended water intake set by the Ghana's Ministry of Health yet the socio-economic/ demographic factors and dietary patterns influencing water intake are lacking. This study investigated the socio-economic/ demographic factors and dietary patterns influencing water intake. A total of 1,548 women with water and food intake data from the 2008 Ghana Demographic Health Survey (GDHS), which is a representative nationwide cross-sectional study, was used. 83% of the women did not meet the recommended daily water intake. Of four dietary patterns ('Beverage & sugary based', 'Meat based', 'Indigenous-tuber based' and 'Indigenous-grain based') emerging, meat based dietary pattern, seasonality, body mass index (BMI), and alcohol consumption emerged as key determinants of water intake. In summary, seasonality, dietary patterns and some key socio-economic/ demographic factors were identified as determinants of water intake. The identified determinants can serve as a basis for nutrition intervention and policies for women in Ghana.
Intake of water and beverages of children and adolescents in 13 countries

To describe the intake of water and all other beverages in children and adolescents in 13 countries of three continents. Data of 3611 children (4-9 years) and 8109 adolescents (10-17 years) were retrieved from 13 cross-sectional surveys (47 % males). In three countries, stratified cluster sampling design was applied to randomly recruit schools classes. A quota method was applied in the other countries to randomly recruit participants. Details on the intake of all fluid types were obtained with a fluid-specific record over 7 consecutive days. In the total sample, the highest mean intakes were observed for water (738 ± 567 mL/day), followed by milk (212 ± 209 mL/day), regular soft beverages (RSB) (168 ± 290 mL/day) and juices (128 ± 228 mL/day). Patterns characterized by a high contribution of water, RSB or hot beverages to total fluid intake were identified among the countries with close geographical location.
