A History and Survey of Network Firewalls (original) (raw)

A Reference Model for Firewall Technology

1997

This paper concentrates on one particular technological aspect of providing communications security, firewall technology. Currently firewall technology is a specialized engineering solution rather than a scientifically based solution.

An Overview of Firewall Types, Technologies, and Functionalities

International Journal of Computing and Related Technologies, 2022

The networks are increasing day by day and their complexity is also increasing every passing second. The businesses are going online; the payments are done online. Hence the user wants their data to be highly secured and the internet is a public network, no one is safe from threats on the internet, hence the networks must be guarded perfectly so that people can trust the internet and they will continue to work online. One of the protective mechanisms under serious consideration is the firewall [1]. A firewall secures the network at its entry points, it checks all the traffic which passes through the entry point. The allowed IPs are called trusted while disapproved IPs are called untrusted in firewall terminologies. This paper provides an overview of firewall types, functionalities, and technologies.

An overview of firewall technologies

The increasing complexity of networks, and the need to make them more open due to the growing emphasis on and attractiveness of the Internet as a medium for business transactions, mean that networks are becoming more and more exposed to attacks, both from without and from within. The search is on for mechanisms and techniques for the protection of internal networks from such attacks. One of the protective mechanisms under serious consideration is the firewall. A firewall protects a network by guarding the points of entry to it. Firewalls are becoming more sophisticated by the day, and new features are constantly being added, so that, in spite of the criticisms made of them and developmental trends threatening them, they are still a powerful protective mechanism. This article provides an overview of firewall technologies.

Network security, filters and firewalls

XRDS: Crossroads, The ACM Magazine for Students, 1995

This article is a general introduction to network security issues and solutions in the Internet; emphasis is placed on route filters and firewalls. It is not intended as a guide to setting up a secure network; its purpose is merely as an overview. Some knowledge of IP networking is assumed, although not crucial.

Design and Implementation of a Distributed Firewall

Handbook of Research on Information Security and Assurance

This chapter presents the design and the implementation of a decentralized firewall. The latter uses autonomous agents to coordinately control the traffic on the network. The proposed framework includes a set of controllers' agents that ensure the packets filtering services, a proxy agent that plays a role of a proxy server and an identifier agent which is responsible for user authentication. The decentralization of the different agents' activities is managed by an administrator agent which is a core point for launching the most important operations of the access control. A prototype has been designed and implemented. Furthermore, the authors hope that the underlying framework will inform researchers of a possible way to implement a decentralized firewall to improve the current solution, and will help readers understand the need for techniques and tools such as firewalls that are useful to protect their network traffic.

IRJET - A Survey on Emergent Firewall Techniques in Computer Networks

IRJET, 2021

Network security is a system that is developed to monitor the malicious activities and safeguard the network, which includes the authentication of information access in a network, that is being controlled by the network administrator. A firewall in a network security system is a tool/software that monitors and controls network traffic. The role of a Firewall is most evident inthe huge organizations or a business. For smooth run of any organization, it is very important to protect their data as well as their client's data. The Firewall helps in ensuring the safety of sensitive and confidential data that the businesses is currentlydealing with. In modern-day scenario, there is no better option for organizations to protect their data than a robust Firewall. It also aids the network administrators to keep the data virus free andalso prevent any intruders from accessing the data. In this paper we bring out the features that the current firewall techniques isoffering and also analyze the same with respect to different network scenarios. In this paper, we are comparing and analyzing different firewall techniques that are of great help by providing useful insights to the cyber security industry. .

A Study of Network Security Systems

International Journal of …, 2010

The three primary goals of network security which are confidentiality, integrity and availability can be achieved by using firewalls. Firewalls provide security by applying a security policy to arriving packets these policy called security rules and also firewalls can perform other functions like Gateway Antivirus, Gateway Monitor Program to monitor the traffic which pass through the firewall and also the firewall can have the responsibility to establish VPN connections. The complexity of these functions can cause significant delays in the processing of packets, resulting in degraded performance, traffic bottlenecks, and ultimately violating Quality of Service constraints. As network capacities continue to increase, the improvement of firewall performance is a main concern. One technique that dramatically reduces required processing is using Network Load Balance Technique. This paper describes how the performance can be effected because of using a Microsoft firewall. in this paper lots of situations and designs will be tested and results will be shown to determine the effect of using firewall in performance. Also in this paper a new technique to increase firewall performance will be discussed and the performance results will be shown.

Firewalls: A study on Techniques, Security and Threats

2019

Information and excitement for computer system security is developing day by day along with its requirement. The interest is no uncertainty, due to the advancements with the extension of web services and due to the extension in the quantity of organizations that usually placing their deals and data channels on the internet or web. Web security has turned into a noteworthy issue in the present pattern of things. And it’s like an evil which whenever left to spread will in a matter of seconds have consequences for every one of us. This paper hence analyzes web security with a glance at firewall and how it can help secure the system and web. A firewall is a piece of a computer or network system that is configured to prevent communication from unauthorized sources whereas allowing access from authorized sources. The techniques and kinds of firewalls are additionally talked about. The paper further examines firewall and how it can help in web security, business security and individual sys...

A Survey on the Different Firewall Technologies

International journal of engineering applied science and technology, 2020

Given the importance of internet in our day to day lives in today's world, network security is of utmost importance. A firewall acts as a barrier that provides security by filtering traffic. However, traditional firewalls are no longer capable of overcoming new security threats. In this paper, the different types of firewalls, their functionalities and their drawbacks are discussed. This paper talks about the advantages that the different types of firewalls offer. This is a systematic study of the different research work that has been carried out in the different Firewall technologies over the last few years. The firewall types which are discussed mainly are Packet filtering, Circuit level gateways, Stateful inspection, Proxy firewalls, Next Generation firewalls and Cloud based firewalls.
