"« Les grandes étapes de la liturgie byzantine» de Miguel Arranz, quarante ans après," in: 60 semaines liturgiques à Saint-Serge. Bilans et perspectives nouvelles, ed. A. Lossky and G. Sekulovski (Münster: Aschendorff, 2016), 295–310. (original) (raw)
In 1975, at the 22nd Semaine d’études liturgiques dedicated to the topic of liturgy in the particular and universal Church, Father Miguel Arranz, S.J., presented an overview of the milestones (“grandes étapes”) of Byzantine liturgy, summarizing the history of Constantinople, Jerusalem, and Slavic lands and synthesizing over one thousand years of the complex history of the liturgy of the Orthodox Church in fewer than thirty pages. The article published in Bibliotheca « Ephemerides Liturgicae » « Subsidia » has become a classic work, cited often throughout the world in liturgical studies. Almost forty years later, the time has come to underscore the article’s importance and, at the same time, to update its conclusions in light of recently discovered sources and new studies.
