Folate requirement among women who plan to become pregnant should be raised to 600 μg/day during the periconceptional period. To meet this need, several countries began to promote the use of folic acid supplements before and during pregnancy. Here, we investigated prevalence and determinants of dietary folate intake and folic acid supplement use among 397 pregnant women (aged 15–50 years old, median = 37 years old). We also investigated their effects on neonatal outcomes in a subgroup of women who completed pregnancy. For doing that, we used data from the “Mamma & Bambino” project, an ongoing mother-child cohort settled in Catania (Italy). Inadequate folate intake was evaluated using a Food Frequency Questionnaire and defined as an intake < 600 μg/day. Demographic factors determining folic acid supplementation in pregnant and childbearing age women

Objectives: Adequate folate intake constitutes a significant problem in the periconceptional period and early pregnancy but can be achieved by folic acid (FA) supplementation. Low intake of folate may cause numerous negative effects on the pregnancy outcome, including recurrent miscarriage, preeclampsia, fetal hypotrophy, premature delivery, premature placental abruption, and intrauterine fetal death. The aim of the study was to evaluate factors determining FA supplementation in the population of Polish women before and during pregnancy. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 257 women hospitalized postpartum at the Division of Perinatology and Women's Diseases, Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland. We evaluated folic acid intake considering selected demographic data. A structured questionnaire was used to evaluate folic acid intake before and during pregnancy of the investigated women. Results: The vast majority of the investigated women (89.1%) took FA during pregnancy. During the pre-pregnancy period, a statistically significantly higher supplementation of folic acid was observed among women with the monthly income level of > 5000 PLN (p = 0.03), and among women who planned their pregnancy as compared to women who did not plan their pregnancy (p < 0.001). During pregnancy, these differences disappeared. A statistically significantly higher number of secundi-and multiparas did not take FA during pregnancy as compared to primiparas (p = 0.008). No correlation between cigarette smoking and FA intake was observed. Conclusions: Our analysis showed that FA intake increased (by 36.2%) during pregnancy as compared to the pre-pregnancy period, and depended on income, parity, and pregnancy planning.

Aims: To investigate the possible differences in folic acid use and to identify the determinants of antenatal folic acid use among multi-ethnic pregnant women. Methods: Three hundred and fifty pregnant women participated in this cross-sectional study in a university hospital in Brussels, Belgium. A questionnaire was used to obtain data on socio-demographic characteristics and folic acid use. x 2tests and binary logistic regression analyses were performed using SPSS 17. Results: In the overall cohort, 59.2% used folic acid supplements during pregnancy. This supplement use was associated with an age of 26-35 years, being of Western origin, with high education and employment status, understanding physician's instructions, and early booking for antenatal care.

Objective: As a means to prevent neural tube defects (NTDs), women planning pregnancy in Denmark are recommended to take a dietary supplement of 400 mg folic acid daily during the periconceptional period. We examined compliance with this recommendation in a national survey. Design: Cohort study on pregnant women in Denmark. Setting: The Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC). Subjects: From November 2000 to February 2002, 22 000 pregnant women were recruited for DNBC. Use of dietary supplements was recorded at enrolment. Compliance with the recommendation was related to an information campaign that took place during the second half of 2001, and to lifestyle factors provided in a telephone interview by the end of the first trimester of pregnancy. Results: An increase was seen in the proportion of women complying with the recommendation in the study period and this coincided with the information campaign events. However, even at the end of the period, only 22.3% of the women who had planned their pregnancy fully complied with the recommendation. No increase at all was seen in periconceptional folic acid use among women with unplanned pregnancies. Young age, low education and smoking were identified as factors that determined non-compliance. Conclusions: Alternative and more effective strategies are needed if the Danish population is to benefit fully from the knowledge that folic acid prevents NTDs. Future strategies should not only target vulnerable groups, such as the less educated and the young, but also women who get pregnant without planning this. The only possible way to reach the last group may be through fortification of foods with folic acid.

To evaluate the sociodemographic and lifestyle factors associated with insufficient and excessive use of folic acid supplements (FAS) among pregnant women. A pregnancy cohort to which multinomial logistic regression models were applied to identify factors associated with duration and dose of FAS use. The Growing Up in New Zealand child study, which enrolled pregnant women whose children were born in 2009-2010. Pregnant women (n 6822) enrolled into a nationally generalizable cohort. Ninety-two per cent of pregnant women were not taking FAS according to the national recommendation (4 weeks before until 12 weeks after conception), with 69 % taking insufficient FAS and 57 % extending FAS use past 13 weeks' gestation. We examined the relationship between dietary folate intake and periconceptional use of folic acid (FA) supplements, and small-for-gestational age for weight (SGA-W) and height (SGA-H). The study is based on 786 Spanish women aged 16 years or above, who attended the first-term prenatal population-based screening programme (10-13 weeks) at the reference hospital 'La Fe', Valencia, with singleton pregnancy. Periconceptional use of FA supplements was categorised as non-users, moderate users ( ≤ 1 mg/d) and high users (>1 mg/d). Babies born to mothers who used high doses of FA supplements had a significant reduction in mean birth height compared with babies of non-users (β = - 0·53, 95 % CI - 0·96, - 0·09). Intake of folic in the periconceptional period reduces the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs). The aim of this study was to assess the level of awareness regarding the use of folic acid in pregnacy. We assessed the consumption of folic acid during pregnancy among Turkish women presented to the hospital and analyzed the difference of folic acid supplementation between planned and unplanned pregnancies. Of the 1076 women, 677 (62.9%) reported current use of a prenatal folic acid at the time of the department visit, while 399 pregnant women (37.0%) identified themselves as non-users (p = 0.006). In the unplanned pregnancy group, 302 (65.22%) women reported taking folic acid during pregnancy, but 161 (34.77%) women began three months prior to conception as recommended by their gynecologists (p<0.0001). The needs for micronutrients are increased during pregnancy primarily due to physiological changes and altered homeostatic control. Food, as the primary source of all nutrients, is not always sufficient to cover the increased needs, whereas the degree and frequency of nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy is various in demographic groups. The aim of this paper was to investigate the nutritional intake of folic acid among pregnant women in Niš, Serbia. The research was conducted in 2014 and 2015 which included pregnant women who lived on the territory of the City of Niš, between 20 and 35 years of age.
