Courses and careers: measuring how students’ personalvalues matter

Education + Training, 2014

Purpose– Students’ values influence their choice of academic degrees that direct future careers. The purpose of this paper is to investigate measuring personal values by testing the relevance of the original nine personal values in the List of Values (LOV) scale in the situation-specific context of higher education in relation to student's educational choices in pursuing particular career pathways.Design/methodology/approach– The study involved two stages of iterative analysis of data from undergraduate students (N=304) at an Australian university for the purpose of constructing a personal values importance scale (PVIS). The paper assesses construct dimensionality, and convergent and discriminate validities of PVIS.Findings– Results suggest a two-factor PVIS scale of internal and external values is a valid and reliable psychometric diagnostic tool leading to better understanding of choice behaviour in an educational context. Business students reported both internal and external ...

Personal values in relation to graduate career choices

Purpose -This paper aims to investigate the personal values predominating in different academic areas to identify relations that may be of interest to university managers. Exploratory in nature, it seeks to understand how human values can be used to enhance the academic courses according to the profile of each group. Design/methodology/approach -The sample consisted of 1,609 students attending a large Brazilian university, whose values are measured using the Rokeach values survey. The data are firstly submitted to exploratory factor analysis to identify a set of factors later used to construct perceptual maps. Finally, the careers are grouped and typified according to the predominant values in each one. Findings -Results suggest that students of some careers are more prone to be classified through their values than others, but in general terms each professional group shows some particularity. Most careers can be typified by the values students consider more important for them or by the values they depreciate, or by both. In some cases the combination of high evaluation in some dimensions with poor evaluation in others offered greater insight.

Value Configuration in Higher Education – Intermediate Tool Development for Teaching in Complex Uncertain Environments and Developing a Higher Education Value Framework

ATHENS JOURNAL OF EDUCATION

This conceptual paper addresses the issue of value creation in the field of higher education and presents a new theoretical perspective by assigning the Service Dominant Logic (SD-logic) and developing a higher education value framework, consisting of ten "foundational premises" for a better understanding of higher education phenomena. Furthermore, based on the theoretical findings this paper presents the Empirical Research Map as a holistic, intermediate learning-und teaching-tool that provides a navigational aid through the entire socio-scientific empirical research process and visualizes all interlinked research steps on a single DIN-A-3-sheet. The empirical research process is affected by high complexity and thus uncertainty. Students have to make many decisions and have problems in anticipating long-range and secondary effects. From a didactic perspective, the Empirical Research Map facilitates making important decisions, the anticipation of long-range and secondary effects and therefore provides additional value to researchers, teachers and students in the social sciences.

Value Preferences of University Students as Predictors of Life Goals

Social Indicators Research, 2014

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between value preferences and life goals, and find out to what extent values preferences predict life goals. The study consisted of 273 university students. A Schwartz Value Survey was conducted to determine the value preferences of the participants, and a Life Goals Scale was used to measure their purposes in life. Multi Regression Analysis was used to determine the predictive power of value preferences regarding life goals. According to the regression coefficients (b), values of safety, benevolence and conformity positively predict intrinsic life goals. However, only values of power and hedonism positively predict extrinsic life goals. It was found that values of safety, benevolence and conformity positively predict intrinsic life goals at a significant level. Similarly, values of power and hedonism positively predict extrinsic life goals at a significant level.

Choice of a Value Identification Method in Career Counselling

Rural Environment Education Personality (REEP), 2019

The paper presents the results of research on the role of choice of a value identification method for career counselling. The research aim is to analyse the results of application of value identification methods in career counselling. To achieve the aim, the present research studied students of vocational education institutions and analysed the results of an exercise done by the students as well as analysed relevant theories. The study involved 111 students aged 17-30. The study identified that five most important values for the youth with regard to their career development were as follows: stability, satisfaction, security, freedom and money. The research findings contribute to an understanding of the role of application of value identification methods in career counselling and give insight into the most important values for the youth. Career specialists and personnel selection specialists could use the findings in their career counselling practices.

The Value System of University Students

2020

Values occupy a central position in the cognitive system and personality of a university student because they include both the affective and behavioural components of knowledge. In addition, they determine a student's attitudes and motivations. Reflecting on students' values is of particular importance to the education system due to the relationship between educational and human values, which restores or newly encapsulates the real role of the school in creating values. Through school, it is possible to build and develop human values in students, making it a place for building this while respecting the wider social context and recognizing the importance of the family. At the same time, it is important that the prevailing cognitive nature of learning is balanced by anthropological dimensions and by sufficient space for other aspects of students' personal development.

Is the Evaluation of the Students’ Values Possible? An Integrated Approach to Determining the Weights of Students’ Personal Goals Using Multiple-Criteria Methods

Eurasia journal of mathematics, science and technology education, 2016

To maximize the effectiveness of a decision, it is necessary to support decision-making with integrated methods. It can be assumed that subjective evaluation (considering only absolute values) is only remotely connected with the evaluation of real processes. Therefore, relying solely on these values in process management decision-making would be a mistake because this might lead to the lack of agreement between the criteria of the process. The absolute values of criteria are required for decision making, while the integrated criteria evaluation is necessary for making consistent decisions, taking into account the relative values of the criteria as well.

Training on How Students Choose Their Academic Career Paths

KnE Social Sciences

The lack of knowledge that students face in choosing their careers is one of the issues for those who want to continue their education. Vocational High School (SMK) graduates hope to get a job after graduation rather than continue their study. However, it does not preclude the possibility that they will continue their studies at the higher education level. Therefore, this training aims to enhance participants’ capacity to plan their career paths, particularly for higher education. The first step in the training process is distributing the material, followed by a workshop. A lecture introduces the subject matter, and a workshop setting involves participatory action research. The evaluation’s findings demonstrate that students’ knowledge and skills improve due to the training received, and they can better comprehend the career path they will eventually pursue. Digging Deeper: the Laddering Interview, a Tool for Surfacing Values

Journal of Management Education, 2007

Personally held values play a fundamental role in business. As such, it is critical that students understand the nature of values pertaining to the workplace. Using an innovative classroom exercise, laddering, business students interview individuals to identify values that influence choices. Objectives are to help students understand the role of personal values in decision making, develop the ability to respond effectively to workplace demands, respect diverse perspectives, and achieve a better understanding of their own values. Measures used to assess these learning objectives revealed that many students gained valuable insights. After participating in the exercise, students wrote passages in which they articulated how their values affected their decision-making behavior, described in detail how the exercise improved their improvisational skills, and helped them gain respect for others' viewpoints. Furthermore, a quantitative survey provided evidence that students may have experienced a greater understanding of their own values after participating in the exercise.
