This paper provides an expository analysis of the African concept of beauty, giving the basic notions of beauty as peculiar to different cultures and traditions of the peoples of Africa. This paper focuses on the homogeneity of African concept of beauty, as well as the basic similarities in the diverse parts of Africa. The idea of beauty which is relative to culture and traditions, amazingly hinges on two dimensions: the inner and the outer forms. Although there are diverse cultures in Africa, this paper seeks to reveal the “oneness” of African idea of beauty, amidst the cultural diversities in the continent. In a bid to capture the notions of beauty in Africa, this paper will focus on some cultures on the Eastern, Western, Southern and Northern parts of Africa, leading to a basic overview of what beauty is to an average African man.
