CFD predictions of flow through a centrifugal pump impeller
With the aid of computational fluid dynamics, the complex internal flows in water pump impellers can be well predicted, thus facilitating the design of pumps. This paper describes the simulation of the flow into the impeller of an experimental centrifugal pump. The commercial three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code Fluent, with a standard k-ε two-equation turbulence model is used to simulate the problem under examination. In the calculation, the finite-volume method along with a structured grid system is used for the solution procedure of the discretized governing equations for this problem. The calculation predicts the flow pattern and the pressure distribution in the untwisted blade passages and finally the overall performances and the head-capacity curve are discussed. The Use of CFD for Flow Analysis and Performance Prediction of Centrifugal Pumps
This paper presents some user experience in using the commercial CFD code Fluent for pump flow field calculations. It demonstrates the use of the code with respect to simulating the flow within an industrial centrifugal pump and predicting the corresponding head-capacity curve. Throughout the paper, the CFD model of the selected pump is discussed. The pump with backward curved blades is modeled and meshed with unstructured grid. Quasi-steady calculations utilizing the k-ε turbulence model and the multi reference frame technique are performed for the design point as well as for a range of volume rates with a deviation of 50% from the design value but with similar flow patterns. The data obtained allow the analysis of the main phenomena existent in the pump, such as: pressure changes in the volute for different flow rates; and the incidence at the leading edge of the blade with different flow conditions.
FLOW SIMULATION AND PERFORMANCE PREDICTION OF CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS USING CFD-TOOL
With the aid of computational fluid dynamics, the complex internal flows in water pump impellers can be well predicted, thus facilitating the product development process of pumps. In this paper a commercial CFD code was used to solve the governing equations of the flow field. A 2-D simulation of turbulent fluid flow is presented to visualize the flow in a centrifugal pump, including the pressure and velocity distributions. The standard k- turbulence model and SIMPLEC algorithm were chosen for turbulence model and pressure-velocity coupling respectively. The simulation was steady and moving reference frame was used to consider the impeller-volute interaction. The head and efficiency at different flow rates are predicted and they agree well with those available in literature for similar pump. From the simulation results it was observed that the flow change has an important effect on the location and area of low pressure region behind the blade inlet and the direction of velocity at impeller inlet. From the study it was observed that FLUENT simulation results give good prediction of performance of centrifugal pump and may help to reduce the required experimental work for the study of centrifugal pump performance.
Investigation of Key Impeller Parameters of Centrifugal Pump Using CFD
The impeller of a centrifugal pump plays an important role in converting the input driver energy into kinetic energy. The impeller is a complex structure and moreover the conventional trial and error method is cost consuming to experiment with. CFD analysis is a solution to this problem. This paper presents the numerical investigation of the effects of the key design parameters, including blade number, inlet blade angle, trimmed impeller profile, and impeller diameter, have on the steady state liquid flow in a three-dimensional centrifugal pump. Initially the impeller model is geometrically constructed based on certain performance modified parameters. The model is then meshed and CFD analysis is carried out. The inner flow fields, pressure and velocity distribution are predicted. Results obtained from the analysis are then compared with the actual results and inferences are made.

A Study in the Use of CFD in the Design of Centrifugal Pumps
CFD has the potential of assisting an engineer in arriving at improved designs. However, to be effective, this requires a much closer cooperation and mutual understanding between the pump specialist and the expert in CFD, than it is presently in existence. This conclusion is based on actual case histories from past experience, as well as considerations of the physical meaning of certain mathematical expressions. The presented discussion relates, primarily, to the design of centrifugal pumps. However, there are strong indications that analogical situations exist also in other fields of fluids engineering. The purpose of this report is to identify /observe and determine the pattern of velocity profile and pressure distribution by using CFD simulation program after the 3D design and modeling of the pump is made using Vista CPD. We have also created a Solid model using Fusion 360 to get a clear idea of Centrifugal pump design. Basically, this report revolves around the idea of investigating the effect and distribution of velocity profile and pressure within a pump having the following specification, Head = 20 m, Flow rate = 100 m 3 /hr, and RPM = 2000. 3D Navier-Stokes equations were solved using ANSYS CFX. The standard k −εturbulence model was chosen for the turbulence model. From the design point of view, we have studied the effects of different parameters like rotational speed, volume flow rate etc on the impeller and volute. From the simulation results it was observed that the pressure increases gradually from impeller inlet to outlet. The static pressure on the pressure side is evidently larger than that on the suction side at the same impeller radius. In addition to this, it was observed that the velocity increases from the impeller inlet until it enters the volute casing. It then drops to a minimum value at the outlet region.

This paper presents the numerical investigation of the effects that the pertinent design parameters, including the blade height, the blade number, the outlet blade angle, the blade width, and the impeller diameter, have on the steady state liquid flow in a three-dimensional centrifugal pump. Three cases were considered for this study: impeller, combined impeller and volute, and combined impeller and diffuser. The continuity and Navier-Stokes equations with the k-ε turbulence model and the standard wall functions were used by means of ANSYS-CFX code. The results achieved reveal that the selected key design parameters have an impact on the centrifugal pump performance describing the pump head, the brake horsepower, and the overall efficiency. To valid the developed approach, the results of numerical simulation were compared with the experimental results considering the case of combined impeller and diffuser.
CFD Analysis of centrifugal pump impeller for performance enhancement
Centrifugal pumps are used extensively for pumping water over short to medium distance through pipeline where the requirements of head and discharge are moderate. This project is devoted to enhance the performance of the centrifugal pump through design modification of impeller. Theories on pump characteristics are studied in detail. Vane profile of the impeller is generated using point by point method. The impeller is modelled in Solidworks 2012 software and CFD analysis is done using fluid flow simulation package. CFD analysis enables to predict the performance of the pump and a comparative analysis is made for the entire control volume by varying meshing Pump impeller models have been developed for critical design parameters of the pump. CFD analysis is done in the models to predict the pump performance virtually. Experimental analysis is to be carried out during the second phase of the project work.
