Contemporary Practice of Islam and Religious Freedom in Japan
2019
The development of Islam in contemporary Japan was followed by the development of Islamic religious facilities in this country. This article explained the practice of Islamic teaching in contemporary Japan and the positive response of Japanese society to the implementation of Islamic teaching in Japan. Although Muslims in Japan face many problems in carrying out daily religious activities, they can overcome these problems with the 'help' of Islamic countries and Islamic communities outside Japan. The government does not have specific policy nor facilitates on Islam or any other religions, because religious freedom is guaranteed in the 1947 Constitution of Japan. Government policies on ‘halal’ industry make it easier for Muslims to carry out their beliefs and also become economic spur for tourism purposes. This qualitative research was conducted using historical research methods and literature
The New Muslim Generation in Japan: Challenges and Future
As Muslim immigration trends continue to make Japan a religiously diverse country, Japan’s global claim of peace policy multicultural society has been facing various challenges. The new non-indigenous Muslim generation is being nurtured to compete with an array of identity dimensions in their lives and various others including Islamic faith, ethnic culture heritage of their parents, their exposure to the standards and practices of Japanese culture through school, politics and the media. Thus, they seem as a matter of fact, to be “caught between two worlds,” in between the religious and cultural identities and experiences of their parents and those of the mainstream Japanese culture, on the other. This paper aims to examine the problems and challenges faced by the new Muslim generation in Japan, finding some measures and suggestions based on realistic experiences for the better future of Muslims in Japan. The Japan Islamic Congress: A Possible Case of an Islamic New Religion in Japan
Journal of Religion in Japan, 2018
The present article discusses the possibility of regarding the Japan Islamic Congress (JIC), a religious organization that claimed a membership of over 50,000 in the 1980s, as a new religion. It examines major factors in the expansion of the JIC through highlighting five characteristics it shares with new religions, namely, 1) it had a charismatic leader, attributed with the power to ‘heal’; 2) it attracted members through the curing of illnesses, with many joining as nominal members; 3) it focused on making practice easy and organizing large-scale events where the group’s identity is emphasized; 4) its teachings display a syncretic nature, combining Islamic and Buddhist ideas; and 5) it was actively engaged with society, especially the fields of medicine and politics. Critiquing the view taken by existing scholarship that attributes the JIC’s decline to its teachings not representing “genuine Islam,” the article further argues that, in addition to the lack of a capable successor, three other factors can be highlighted as possible reasons for the JIC’s inability to survive: 1) its primary channel of contact with potential members was limited to medical service; 2) apart from this medical service, it did not develop teachings or practices that would lead directly to the improvement of life; and 3) it did not meet the needs of contemporary Japanese society, where the interest in more personal spirituality had started to grow.
New Trends in Japanese Scholarship on Islam
When there is talk about Islam, Japan is not a country that comes instantaneously to our minds. Nevertheless, there are many substantial bonds and links between Japan and the Islamic world. Japan’s resource diplomacy, which centres mainly on petroleum and oil, is one of these. Perhaps, that is why various aspects of Islam including history and culture as well as the relationship with the Muslim world have been some of the important areas of scholars’ interest in Japanese academia, particularly in the last few decades. There have been three peaks in the history of Japanese scholarship regarding Islam: first is before the Second World War, the second is post-war period after the “oil shock” and the last is after 9/11. Although, Islam was not studied as a religion in early stages because the role of comparative religion was minor and the Japanese scholarship in general was mainly confined to publications in Japanese language. However, gradually the situation has improved. The academic activities in recent years are different from earlier as the spectrum of research has widened studying Islam from various approaches such as methodological and typological. Another recent trend is the production of quite reasonable amount of material in English. This brief survey on Japanese scholarship on Islam shall trigger the attention of Pakistani scholars for further studies and be helpful to understand how Islam is perceived in Japan.
Japan’s Relations with Muslim Asia: Trans-Continental Normativity and Policy
and his team at LJC America in Salt Lake City, and Dr. Sonya Nieves from Broward College. Also, the Consulate General of Japan in Miami has also been instrumental in providing a network of connections. Furthermore, I would be remiss without extending my deep appreciation to the Mohsin and Fauzia Jaffer Center for Muslim World Studies, in the Green School of International and Public Affairs at FIU. The Jaffer Center provided financial assistance in several cases, including a research trip to Tokyo, but the Jaffer Center also facilitated a gathering of scholars eager to broaden dialogue on Islam and global affairs. Through the Jaffer Center, I was given ample opportunity to present this work and discuss it with scholars of Islam who provided insightful perspectives and showed a keen interest in the project. I am eager to see the developments at the Jaffer Center in coming years. v
