Total quality management perspective on assessing institutional performance
New Directions for Institutional …, 1994
Other contributors to this volume have pointed out that higher education administrators have much experience with the use of performance indicators as guides to policy. Many institutions have a fairly long history of incorporating data systematically into their institutional decision-making processes. This chapter connects these familiar uses of performance indicators with higher education's more recent interest in Total Quality Management (TQM).

This study aims to analyse the quality management system (QMS) practices performed in ISO 9001 certified engineering educational institutes of India. The literature divulged that QMS in engineering education mainly engrossed on teaching, learning, examinations, student results and infrastructure. Very few studies mentioned QMS in terms of organizational effectiveness. Thus the author has conducted the QMS analysis in forty-five engineering educational institutions (EEIs) of Delhi NCR area in India and selected two groups of institutions based on years of existence. Group-a consists of twenty institutions less than fifteen years old, and group-b consists of twenty-five institutions over fifteen years old. Data were collected using a questionnaire from forty-five engineering educational institutions. The questionnaire was prepared using QMS constructs (ten factors) followed by the institutions and the quality measures followed by the national board of accreditation-NBA in India. Data analysis was done using SPSS 26.0 software to conclude the student t-test and p-value. The author found that the group-b institutions received substantially higher scores in variables that had top management commitment, systemic management appr oach, customer satisfaction, employee involvement, training, teamwork, continuous improvement, corporate social responsibility, academic culture and knowledge audit compared to group-a institutions. The study also revealed the strong and weak points of the institutional QMS, and there is a strong need to incorporate ISO 9001:2015based QMS practices for the continuous improvement of institutions.

Managing Quality and Excellence: Conceptual and Institutional Factors
India Higher Education Report 2019: Governance and Management of Higher Education in India ed. NV Varghese and Garima Malik (Sage, 2020): Chapter 11, 2020
This brief study will commence by outlining the theoretical debates, worldwide, surrounding the measuring of quality and excellence in higher education. It will then go on to consider the situation at the institutional level in India, drawing upon the author's own experience at a relatively small and poorly funded state university in India that has nevertheless achieved a high reputation nationally, as well as a degree of international recognition, for its academic excellence. It will end by asking how far this reflects real possibilities within our much-criticised public university system, and is replicable as a model by other institutions-especially the many new universities, both public and private, that are being created today.

Quality education is considered to be pivotal and imperative in the present context of cut-throat competition. This has prompted higher educational institutions to go for a quality model. Responding to the stakeholders' expectations and the government's regulations, most of the engineering institutions in India have implemented one or two of the quality management concepts in a bid to maintain quality in education. In compliance with the above, a comprehensive quality model called IEQMS (Integrated Educational Quality Management System) was developed incorporating the important dimensions from the following quality concepts. The quality concepts are ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System, ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System, Occupational Health and Safety Management System, Six Sigma (Define -Measure-Analyse-Improve -Control [DMAIC] Methodology), Knowledge Management, Lean Thinking, and Total Quality Management. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the importance of the critical success factors in the implementation of the IEQMS model in Engineering Educational Institutions from the perspective of members of faculty. For this purpose, data were collected from 324 faculty members of engineering colleges in India through a structured, validated, and standardised questionnaire. The model fit was established by using the structural equation modelling technique. The findings of the research showed the goodness of the model fit.
