Computing has evolved from isolated machines, providing calculative suppor t of applications, toward communication networks that provide functional suppor t to g roups of people and embedded systems. Perhaps, one of the most compelling feature and benefit of computers is their overwhelming computing efficienc y. Today, we conceive distr ibuted computational systems of an ever-increasing sophistication, which we then apply in var ious settings -cr itical suppor t functions of our society just to name one impor tant application area. The spread and impact of computing, in ter ms of so-called infor mation society technologies, has obviously gained a very high momentum over the years and today it delivers a technology that our societies have come to depend on. To this end, concer ns related to our acceptance of qualities of computing, e.g., dependability, are increasingly emphasized by users as well as vendors.

Abstract. This paper sets out a programme of work in the area of dependability. The research is to be pursued under the aegis of a sixyear Inter-Disciplinary Research Collaboration funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The research considers computer-based systems which comprise humans as well as hardware and software. The aim here is to indicate how formal methods ideas, coupled with structuring proposals, can help address a problem which clearly also requires social science input.

If AI algorithms are now pervasive in our daily life, they essentially deliver non-critical services, i.e., services which failures remain socially and economically acceptable. In order to introduce those algorithms in critical systems, new engineering practices must be defined to give a justified trust in the capability of the system to deliver the intended services. In this paper, we give an overview of the approach that we have put in place to reach this goal in the framework of the French Confiance.ai program. Based on the needs of the industrial partners of the program, we propose a model-based analysis framework capturing the two dimensions of the problem: the one related to the development and operation of the system and the one related to the trust in the system.

This paper is two-fold. In the first part it tries to raise awareness on the level of complexity of future computer-based interconnected systems/infrastructures, at least as they are envisioned, and on the level of dependability we are today able to justify with confidence. It tries to motivate that fundamental methods and methodologies must be reconsidered, studied, exploited, assessed and applied to move towards an utopia that can be called "ambient dependability", a global view of the concept of dependability , which encompasses not only the technological aspects but includes inter and multi disciplinary fields, which span over ergonomics, usability, education, sociology, law and government. The second part of the paper provides the authors views, based on their experience, on future directions and architectural challenges to be tackled for approaching, as a first step towards ambient dependability, at least an Information Society which we can depend on.

We propose to organize the logical level of the computers interconnected worldwide as a kind of a life modeling our own. We assume this universe populated with programs of a new kind called beings. Beings do not need to be intelligent, their goal is to provide services through some internal and external capabilities. They are autonomous, active and interoperable to the point to behave living individuals. They are aware of their capabilities, able to use those of other beings, may acquire new capabilities and may give birth to new beings. We show that the model is feasible already and that beings may be implemented as multidatabase systems, storing data and capabilities and working in a federation. We discuss perspectives for the software engineering and the database systems that follow from the model. Motto.
