A Review on Green ICT Solutions for CO2 Emissions

2016

Our world’s resources, has been decaying faster than we imagine. The major issues in which most of the countries face now are global economic crisis, energy issues and climate change. The idea of green economy has emerged as a solution for a sustainable development as per UNEP 2011. ICT industry has been identified as one of the key solution for the reduction of green house gas to a certain extent. This paper discusses about the sources of CO2 , the impacts due to tremendous increase in CO2 and a green solution for the reduction of CO2 with the help of ICT.

Economic Aspects of Green ICT

Green in Software Engineering, 2015

Over the last decades, the use of information and communications technology (ICT) and software systems has exploded, making our lives and work much more efficient. However, besides the benefits that ICT brings us, it also contributes significantly to environmental issues , not only because of the electricity consumed by computers, data centers, networks, or other ICT utilities but also due to the rapidly growing computation needs of emerging software systems that contribute significantly to ever-increasing energy demands and greenhouse gas emissions . Decreasing ICT operation expenses becomes more and more crucial. How to make ICT greener (i.e., environmentally sustainable) and how to develop greener software have been gaining significant attention .

Impact of Green Computing in It Industry to Make Eco Friendly Environment

The tremendous explorations in Information Technologies and the range of new equipment being developed every passing day, 21 st century can aptly be labelled as the -Century of Gadgets and Gizmos‖. The term Green Computing refers to the practice of using energy wisely and efficiently, causing negligible degradation to environmental resources and parameters also maintaining feasibility on the other hand. It is basically a balanced and sustainable approach towards the achievement of a healthy and clean environment without compromising the needs and necessities of technology for the present generation. Thus taking up a more holistic and careful approach to making our IT-industry greener definitely falls in our list of responsibilities in creating a more healthier, safer and clean environment. This also revolves on spreading awareness and ensuring people to take their necessary individual steps towards achieving the goals of Green Computing. In the present paper the authors have made a systematic study of several strategies, approaches and practices of green and energy efficient computing, in context to the growth and impact of the IT industry on environment in the recent years. The plans towards a greener IT-industry should include new electronic products and services with optimum efficiency and all possible options solutions towards energy savings.

Adoption of Green ICT in IIUM towards Sustainable Environment

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays an important role to shape the modern era. It brings numerous benefits and facilities to the society and users. However, the usage of the ICT devices and its entire life cycle produce hazardous substances including harmful CO 2 . Reducing the energy consumption in an individual or organizational level effected the ultimate reduction of CO2 in global perspective. Therefore, the adoption of green ICT is becoming more popular due to the increasing number of ICT infrastructures and facilities. Considering this issue in mind, this paper addresses the scenario of energy consumption in the field of ICT in global context. Particularly, an awareness survey has been conducted among staff and students of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) to assess the adoption trend of green ICT in campus. Public awareness is considered one of the most important factors to increase the adoption of green ICT in everywhere. During the group survey, a short briefing and discussion also have been conducted to inform and motivate the students about green ICT. The survey results show that some interviewees are still not familiar with this "green ICT" term and its adoption. Therefore, further motivation and influence need to be drawn among staff and students towards sustainable development.

Sustainable Green Information Technology to Reduce the Environmental Impact

Alternation: Interdisciplinary Journal for the Study of the Arts and Humanities in Southern Africa, 2019

Climate change are the challenges facing environment today. Environmental sustainability is a persistent problem. IT is also growing at a quicker rate in a variety of fields. Due to this, the world is facing an increasing environmental threat which are posing severe challenges to the human race. Tackling these environmental problems and establishing a sustainable environment requires the adoption of appropriate sustainable green IT strategies in all of the South African tertiary institutions. This study addressed this environmental problem by developing a framework for measuring sustainable green IT practices and policies at universities in South Africa. The research methodology entailed an empirical investigation using a qualitative approach using a case study. The data was collected in the form of semi-structured interview using a representative sample of IT, IS and Computer Science academics who use the system and are already acquainted with IT terminologies, across the conventional South Africa universities. A theoretical framework based on the findings was designed that presented five themes. These are (1) the sustainable environmental development; (2) IT resource optimisation for green solution; (3) e-waste disposal management; (3) energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction; and (5) cost benefit relevance. A total of 30 items relating to the five themes have also been identified. Finally, this paper presented practical guidelines and recommendations for universities in South Africa which are applicable to other educational areas such as schools, institutions and colleges.

Green Computing - A New Horizon of Energy Efficiency and Electronic Waste Minimization: A Global Perspective

2011

Due to tremendous growth of Industrial activities throughout the globe, the climate of the earth is gradually changing. The Increase awareness of climate change and more concern for the environment, has forced the big industries to review their environmental credentials. The Global IT sector, for example, accounts for between two and three percent of the world's total carbon dioxide emissions which contribute towards global warming and climate change. So if the IT companies are increasing exponentially then the global warming will be more and more. Keeping all these facts the companies throughout the world are now paying more attention to Green IT as an initiative towards cost savings and a greener environment. However, a significant percentage of total population of the globe unaware of the various good practices in ICT towards Green IT. In the present work the authors tried to make a systematic study on the issues of climate change and also explore green computing from the business and IT perspective, and also to find the best practices of green computing into the users of ICT.

Evaluating the Environmental Impact of Computer Networking and Developing Sustainable Strategies for Mitigating Climate Change

Evaluating the Environmental Impact of Computer Networking and Developing Sustainable Strategies for Mitigating Climate Change , 2024

The rapid expansion of computer networking has significantly impacted the environment, contributing to climate change through energy consumption, electronic waste, and carbon emissions. This report evaluates the environmental impact of computer networking and proposes sustainable strategies to mitigate these effects. The environmental impact of computer networking primarily stems from energy consumption. Data centres, network infrastructure, and end-user devices consume vast amounts of electricity, leading to significant carbon emissions. Additionally, the production and disposal of networking equipment contribute to electronic waste, further exacerbating environmental issues. To mitigate these impacts, organizations can adopt sustainable strategies. Implementing energy-efficient technologies, such as virtualization and cloud computing, can reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. Furthermore, promoting the circular economy by refurbishing and recycling networking equipment can minimize electronic waste. Education and awareness programs can also play a crucial role in promoting sustainable practices among consumers and businesses. Encouraging the use of energy-efficient networking devices and promoting responsible disposal of electronic equipment can help reduce the environmental impact of computer networking. In conclusion, addressing the environmental impact of computer networking requires a multi-faceted approach involving technological advancements, policy changes, and behavioural shifts. By implementing sustainable strategies, organizations can minimize their carbon footprint and contribute to a more environmentally sustainable future.
