Reference values for lung volumes in an Iranian population: introducing a new equation model
Archives of Iranian medicine, 2009
Measurement of lung volumes, especially residual volume and total lung capacity are essential for assessment of restrictive lung disorders. Information regarding normative prediction values for lung volumes as measured by body plethysmography is scarce, and plethysmographic parameters are believed to be poorly reproducible. In this study, we report a comprehensive set of predictive equations for static lung volumes from a general population sample of urban Iranians as measured by body plethysmography. Standardized measurements were carried out on 1487 healthy nonsmoking volunteers (845 men and 642 women), aged six to 85 years, living in Isfahan, Iran. Nonlinear multiple regression analysis was used to calculate prediction equations based on subjects' ages and heights for the subdivisions of lung volumes [total lung capacity, functional residual capacity, residual volume, and residual volume/total lung capacity (%)], separately for the two genders. The derived equations were used...
Reference values for pulmonary volumes by plethysmography in a Brazilian sample of white adults
Jornal Brasileiro de Pneumologia
Objective: To derive reference values for healthy white Brazilian adults who have never smoked and to compare the obtained values with reference values derived by Crapo and by Neder. Methods: Reference equations by quantile regressions were derived in 122 men and 122 women, non-obese, living in seven cities in Brazil. Age ranged from 21 to 92 years in women and from 25 to 88 years in men. Lung function tests were performed using SensorMedics automated body plethysmographies according ATS/ERS recommendations. Lower and upper limits were derived by specific equations for 5 and 95 percentiles. The results were compared to those suggested by Crapo in 1982, and Neder in 1999. Results: Median values for total lung capacity (TLC) were influenced only by stature in men, and by stature and age in women. Residual volume was influenced by age and stature in both genders. Weight was directly related to inspiratory capacity and inversely with functional residual capacity and expiratory reserve v...
BackgroundLung volumes can be measured by body plethysmography (BP), by inert gas dilution during a single-breath or multiple breaths and by radiographic methods based on chest roentgenogram or CT scanning. Our objective was to analyze the concordance between several methods including a new instrument in a variety of pulmonary conditions.MethodsWe recruited four groups of adult volunteers at the COPD and Tobacco Clinic of a respiratory referral hospital: patients with lung bullae, with obstructive lung diseases, with restrictive lung diseases and healthy controls; all subjects underwent lung volume measurements according to ATS/ERS standards in random order with each method and then CT scanning. Differences among groups were estimated by Kruskal-Wallis tests. Concordance correlation coefficients (CCC) and Bland-Altman plots were performed.ResultsSixty-two patients were studied including 15 with lung bullae, 14 with obstructive lung diseases, 12 with restrictive lung disease and 21 h...
