Neutral meson production in p-Be and pAu collisions at 450 GeV beam energy

European Physical Journal C, 1998

In a joint experiment the TAPS and CERES collaborations have studied the production of the neutral mesons π • , η and ω in 450 GeV p-Be and p-Au collisions at the CERN SPS. The mesons were identified by their π • → γγ, η → γγ, and ω → π • γ decay modes. The cross sections were measured down to very low pT (≥ 20 MeV/c) near mid-rapidity (3.0 < y < 4.0). The η and ω cross sections are smaller than expected from extrapolations of earlier data to low pT . Integrated over all pT , the ratios η/π • and ω/π • are lower by about 25% compared to previously published values. The reduction may be attributed to the large number of low pT pions from decays of heavier mesons. In addition, we have studied the dependence of neutral meson production on the mass of the nuclear target and find it in good agreement with previous measurements of charged mesons.

High-pT pion and kaon production in relativistic nuclear collisions

Physical Review C, 2002

High-pT pion and kaon production is studied in relativistic proton-proton, proton-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions in a wide energy range. Cross sections are calculated based on perturbative QCD, augmented by a phenomenological transverse momentum distribution of partons ("intrinsic kT "). An energy dependent width of the transverse momentum distribution is extracted from pion and charged hadron production data in proton-proton/proton-antiproton collisions. Effects of multiscattering and shadowing in the strongly interacting medium are taken into account. Enhancement of the transverse momentum width is introduced and parameterized to explain the Cronin effect. In collisions between heavy nuclei, the model over-predicts central pion production cross sections (more significantly at higher energies), hinting at the presence of jet quenching. Predictions are made for proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC energies.

meson production at central rapidity in proton–proton collisions at

Physics Letters B, 2012

The p T -differential inclusive production cross section of the prompt charm-strange meson D + s in the rapidity range |y| < 0.5 was measured in proton-proton collisions at √ s = 7 TeV at the LHC using the ALICE detector. The analysis was performed on a data sample of 2.98×10 8 events collected with a minimum-bias trigger. The corresponding integrated luminosity is L int = 4.8 nb −1 . Reconstructing the decay D + s → φ π + , with φ → K − K + , and its charge conjugate, about 480 D ± s mesons were counted, after selection cuts, in the transverse momentum range 2 < p T < 12 GeV/c. The results are compared with the prediction of a model based on perturbative QCD. The ratios of the cross sections of four D meson species (namely D 0 , D + , D * + and D + s ) were determined both as a function of p T and integrated over p T after extrapolating to full p T range, together with the strangeness suppression factor in charm fragmentation. The obtained values are found to be compatible within uncertainties with those measured by other experiments in e + e − , ep and pp interactions at various centre-of-mass energies.
