The study sought to find out the factors affecting academic performance of orphaned children in Bindura District primary schools in Zimbabwe. The descriptive survey design was used in this study. The population was 300 teachers and 50 orphaned children. A sample of 80 teachers and 10 children randomly selected participated in this research study. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews. The SPSS programme was used to analyse the data. The study found out that orphaned children did not perform well academically during class work. They did not do homework assigned by the teachers. The study found out that teachers did not have knowledge or skills to assist orphaned children during teaching and learning. The study recommended that teachers should be equipped with skills to manage orphaned children academically. Orphanhood is a depressing status in life time that one would wish never to occur in any family set up due to its adverse effects. Despite the vulnerable status of the orphaned learners, every child in Kenya has a right to quality education that should lead to good performance and achievement of Universal Primary Education (UPE). Due to their vulnerability, majority of orphaned learners are widely affected and unable to attain good performance. However there are exceptional cases where some orphaned learners perform well and attain high marks which enable them to join good secondary schools and pursue their education very well. Factors Influencing Academic Performance of Primary School’s Orphans in Tanzania

This study investigates the factor influencing orphan's academic performance in primary schools. In Tanzania the number of orphaned students resulted from different causes such as the death of parents from different accidents, diseases and those with divorced parents is drastic increases. Orphaned students are among the most vulnerable members of society, often lacking basic needs and services related to better education. This study investigated the factors influencing the academic performance of orphans in Arusha City. The study used descriptive research design and it was conducted in Arusha City to primary school orphans from different wards. Data were collected from 100 respondents including DEO, WEC, head teachers, class teachers, other teachers, orphans, guardians, and community through interviews. Findings show that orphanage students were performing poorly and this was contributed by many factors including social-economic factors, home learning environment, sexual violence, inferiority complex, school's absenteeism, lack of a system of helping orphaned students in schools. It was recommended that Schools should find a means to identify orphaned students and their needs and provide necessary support including psychological and also encourage them to learn and provide necessary academic support when appropriate. The orphaned students should participate fully in the learning process, and the MoEVT and other Educational stakeholders should plan and establish regular seminars to teachers on how to help students.

Investigating psychosocial problems of orphan children in primary schools

The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychosocial problems of orphan children in public primary schools. The study is based on a mixed-type research design focusing on both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. A total of 73 participants were involved in the study. Fifty-five orphaned students who were participated in filling the questionnaires were selected using simple random sampling technique while six orphaned children, nine teachers and three non-governmental officials were participated in the interview were selected through purposive sampling technique. To analyze the data descriptive statistics, mean score and standard deviation was calculated to determine the psychosocial problems of orphan children. One sample t-test also computed to see whether there was statistical significance different between the expected and actual mean scores at the t-value on the psychosocial problems of orphan children. Data collected through interview was presented and analyzed thematically. The results revealed that orphan children were exposed to diverse psychological problems, economical, social related problems and exhibited in problematic behaviors that tremendously affect their education and life in general. Considering the results, it was recommended that stakeholders, teachers and caregivers should establish a support system at different levels and play a major role to fulfill the psychosocial needs of orphan children.

Orphanhood Effect on Primary School Pupils’ Interpersonal Relationships in Kenya

In Kenya, orphanhood has risen and affected many children among them primary school pupils. A parent’s death may affect children’s psychological well being. There is a close coherence between children’s psychological well-beings and their interpersonal relationships. Children who have poor psychological well-being are likely to be withdrawn, experience low self-esteem and have poor adaptations to human functioning and life experiences. These conditions affect their relations with others hence become deviants. The paper describes the challenges of the orphans due to their living conditions. There were 627 orphans. Consent was obtained from guardians of under-age orphans while those over 18 years old gave their own consent. The study involved 624 (about 99.5%) orphans of the entire group. The orphans perceived the schools they attended as good for their development. Some orphans were travelling far away from their schools to their households. In the homes many orphans stayed in congested homes and lacked privacy. Their failure and absenteeism rates, however, were not high. Many orphans showed general interest in education as they wanted to pursue higher education after completing school education. They were aware of different career paths, and showed ambitions. Some orphans indicated that they also had daily economic and psychological needs. Orphans had different personal problems. Some interventions were recommended.

Types of Family Adopting Orphaned Learners - A Reflection on Challenges and Coping Strategies of Orphaned Learners in Public Primary Schools in Kenya

Orphan hood is a depressing status in life and has adverse effects yet every child in Kenya has a right to quality education that should lead to good learning in pursuance to Universal Primary Education (UPE). Majority of orphaned learners are widely affected and fail to attain good performance. However exceptional few perform well and attain high grades enabling them to join good High schools and pursue their academic dreams. The study therefore assessed the types of family set up that host orphaned learners and the coping strategies they device in the new set up. Descriptive survey design was used to collect data from 13 public primary schools with a sample constituting of head teachers, teachers, and orphaned learners. Random sampling technique was used to select the schools; purposive sampling technique choice head teachers and orphaned learners, and random sampling selected teachers. A questionnaire, interview schedule, and document analysis collected the qualitative and quantitative data. Descriptive statistics analyzed the quantitative data and findings were presented in the frequency/mean tables and graphs while qualitative data was presented thematically. The study established that a good number of orphaned learners in Kenya lived with older siblings and received a lot of motivation and encouragement from the sibling that led to their achievement. The second highest number of orphaned learners lived with grandparents who were economically unable to manage the responsibility. The study concluded that majority of orphaned learners lacked guidance from adults and therefore recommended that grandparents who took care of the orphans but not fully financially assisted by the government should be supported, and the Ministry of Health in collaboration with other good will stake holders to launch health and nutrition program in schools where none exists. The findings of the study are important to the government, educational planners, stakeholders, parents and the community.
