El movimiento iberista en la prensa política española: 'La Iberia' (1854-1856) (original) (raw)

Prensa y periodismo especializado V, 2012

Abstract

Iberismo is the political movement which aims to creat of a single State in the Iberian Peninsula, justified because of its geographical, social and cultural unity –not uniformity–. The second half of the 19th century is the period of time in which Iberismo was at its very peak. Many newspapers at the time spread pro-Iberismo messages. 'La Iberia', a successful Madrid newspaper, was one of the most important, and its publications during the Bienio Progresista (1854-1856), a two-year period of left-wing governments, showed a liberal and progressive approach to the future Iberian State. The frequency of pro-Iberismo messages published by 'La Iberia' and its concerns over the Portuguese political affairs turns the study of this paper into a basic subject to understand how we can classify Iberismo in the stream of political movements of the 19th century. Besides, it is also a critical instrument to revise the history of the relationships between Spain and Portugal.
