Reproductive biology of feather back, chital (Notopterus chitala, Ham.) cultured in a pond of Bangladesh

Int. J. Agril. Res. Innov. & Tech. 2 (1): 26-31, 2012

Studies on Gonadosomatic index (GSI), ova diameter and histology of the gonad were performed to understand reproductive biology of Feather back, Chital (Notopterus chitala) for a period of 6 months from January to June 2010. Thirty live chital fish were used in this study. The mean GSI values for female chital were found to range between 0.20±0.013 and 4.63±0.50. The highest GSI value was found in June. The smallest diameter of ovum was recorded 0.04 mm (January) and the largest was 4.00 mm (June). During the experimental period, the fecundity was ranged from 8,238 to 18,569 (mean 13,052±4607) in fish samples with body weight range from 1,296 to 2,360 (mean 1,742.50±474.44 g) while the relative fecundity was 5.65 to 14.33. Histological study revealed that the percentage of late perinucleolus (LPN) stage was highest in April and Cortical alveoli (CA) stage appeared from April and reached to maximum in May. Vitellogenic stage (VG) appeared in the month of May and chronologically increased through June. Vitellogenic stage (VG) of oocyte as well as highest ova diameter reached to the peak in June. The variations in the gonad weight and GSI of the female fish reached to the peak during June indicating maturity of ovary and definite spawning season.

Morphological Study and Role of Gonad Cells in Freshwater Fish-Reproduction

Reproduction is a vital process provided to all living individuals by the nature itself to reproduce their similar one after death. Channa gachua is used due to easily throughout year availability. Male gonad was removed during different reproductive phases. The nourishing protein contain was recorded by Lowry's method 660nm during matured male gonad as 0.555 mg/ml. Sertoli cells were observed on their development and parameters were recorded with the help of phase contrast microscope (Phase contrast-Olympus) as total number of Sertoli cells 150±199 in number, diameter of the cell 0.1±0.2µ perimeter of the Sertoli Cell 0.1 to 0.01µ in matured testis on the colour intensity. Same conditions were used to abnormal male brooder in hatchery the nourishing protein contain was comparatively low about infertile male brooder in matured gonad as 0.467mg/ml. The development of Sertoli cell and its parameter were comparatively low as number of Sertoli cells 99±120, diameter of the cell 0.001±0.005µ perimeter of the Sertoli Cell in male brooder. The lesser development of sertoli cell leads to improper development of Sertoli gives insufficient sperms cell count for abnormal fertilization.

Studies on Gonadosomatic Index & Stages of Gonadal Development of Striped piggy fish, Pomadasys stridens (Forsskal, 1775) (Family; Pomadasyidae) of Karachi Coast, Pakistan

Gonadosomatic index value in males during September – March were 4.463 to 6.160, while in females the high values during September – February were found to be 3.289 to 9.124, which suggested the spawning period. The highest GSI value in males were 5.792 in stage VI and the lowest GSI value were 1.020 recorded during VII stage. GSI values in male increased slowly reaching to maximum in 5.792 in stage VI and then drastically dropped to 1.020 in stage VII, while in females at high value was 6.363 during stage VI and the lowest GSI values were 1.125 and 1.124 during stages I & II respectively. Seven stages of gonadal development were observed in male and female fish. Pomadasys stridens is a bentho-pelagic fish, found at depth of 30-68m. The results will increase our knowledge of reproductive biology of Pomadasys stridens which is relevant for fisheries and aquaculture management as well as breeding programmes. 1. Fecundity and Gonadal Periodicity of Snakehead, Channa striata from River Indus, Near Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan

Sarhad Journal of Agriculture

T he snakehead Channa striata (Bloch) is an airbreathing fish locally called as Shakur, Sol and commonly as Stripe Murrells is widely distributed in Asia and Africa (Narejo et al., 2015). It is commercially important, high-prized, carnivorous, fast growing and hardy fish could be reared with other cultured Abstract | Fecundity and gonadal periodicity of Channa striata from River Indus, near Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan was examined from 240 samples (120 for each sex) during October 2020 to September 2021.The experimental fish was procured from the commercial catch of local fisher community. The investigations were based on estimation of fecundity and its relationship with other body parameters, variation in egg size and calculation of gonadosomatic index. The results of fecundity estimation were based on 10 mature female fish ranging in size 30.4 to 43 cm and from 235.0 to 765.0 g in length and weight respectively. The lowest egg production (2193) was noted from small sized and highest was recorded (11830 eggs) from large fish. Egg production ability was noted ideally co-related by weight of ovary in relation to length and weight of fish. Egg size measurement reveals that the ova was noted to be increased in size during August to October (0.95 to 1.2 mm), after extrusion, there were no gonads during November to January and again start developing from February 0.1 to 1.2 mm that indicated that fish breeds onetime in year having peak during October. GSI values also showed similar trend of increasing the size of gonads from 0.2 to 2.0 and from 0.5 to 5.5 in both sexes. Lastly, it was decided that egg production capacity (fecundity) showed strong association with ovary weight in Channa striata from River Indus near Jamshoro as compared with other parameters.

Ovarian development and spawning of Bornean endemic fish Hampala bimaculata ( Popta , 1905 ) 1

2017

A study was carried out to determine ovarian development and spawning of Hampala bimaculata. During the study period, 124 females of the fish samples were collected from February to October 2013 and the collection continued from July to November 2014 using gill nets and anglings. Sampling site in Betung Kerihun National Park, West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia included Embaloh and Sibau watersheds. Spawning characteristics of the fish were determined by histological investigation of ovaries and the distribution of oocyte diameter-frequency. Analysis of macroscopic and histological observations showed that the ovaries were classified into five stages: immature or resting, maturing, mature, ripe, and spawned-recovering. The spawning season was estimated to be from July to October based on seasonal changes in maturity frequency of females and monthly variations in the gonadosomatic index. Histological observation showed that the fish is an iteroparous with a groupsynchronous of ovaria...

Seasonal changes in ovarian maturation of an Asian Cat fish, Mystus vittatus (Bloch, 1797) in captivity

Mystus vittatus, an indigenous fish species of West-Bengal are economically important due to its delicious taste. The ovarian histo-morphology and its annual changes and the spawning periodicity of this catfish were studied collected monthly in one year period of November, 2012 to October, 2013. The fecundity, gonado-somatic index, different stages of ovarian development (nucleus changes, oocyte diameter and formation of yolk vesicles, yolk granules and lipid droplets through histological observation) of M. vittatus were also observed in this article. By gross morphology and its seasonal changes of ovary especially on the changes in cell structure of this species, five maturity stages were distinguished to categorize the developing ovary: immature, mature, early ripening, ripe and spent. Our investigation has revealed that gonado-somatic index (GSI) in M. vittatus began to increase in March and peaked in July then declined sharply in September-October. This cat fish attained sexual maturity at 10-11 cm in length, 10-12 g in weight which was confirmed at the peaks of gonado-somatic index (GSI) and fecundity. The fecundity of Mystus vittatus has shown highly significant correlation with body length, body weight and ovary weight.

The Early Gonadal Development of Cultivated Female Cobia Fish (Rachycentron Canadum) at Some Age Using Histological Analysis

2020

The cobia fish (Rachycentron canadum ) is gonochoristic and the oocyte development is nonsynchronous. The aim of this study was to analyse the gonadal development of cobia fish (cultivation fish raised in floating netcage ) starting from juvenile (3 months old) until 15 months old (estimated gonadal maturation). Samples of blood, gonad, and pituitary of female cobia fish at some ages (3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 months) was taken and than the measurement of several parameters, ie ; body weight, gonad weight, body total length, FSH hormone concentration was commenced, and also the making of histological preparation of gonad and pituitary. As well as observation on the growth of body weight and development of cobia fish oocyte (age 6 – 9 month) which raised in controlled tank. The result of this study is that at age 3 – 8 months the development of oocyte reached the previtollogenic stage, while at age of 9 months, the gonad of cobia cultivated fish start developing to stage of vitellogenesis ...
