Abstract

n this paper, we study a formulary of royal letters written by the Portuguese King Edward (1433-1438), which presents the main formulas to be followed in written correspondence with a set of 65 addressees, almost all foreigners, ranging from the highest Church officials and lay officers of the neighboring kingdoms to several relatives of the king. This formulary allows us to know with whom the Portuguese monarch had been corresponding and which forms of the protocols, greetings, final greetings and addresses written on the back of the letter should be used in each case. This study presents the beginning of an analysis of Portuguese royal formularies of a similar nature that the authors intend to pursue.
