Theories that predict the strategic use of debt by players engaged in a vertical relationship are tested using an empirical model of debt usage. It is found that firms selling mainly to other firms are characterised on average by a higher level of debt. No evidence supports the notion that buyers increase their leverage to commit themselves not to behave opportunistically towards their suppliers. The results in the paper also suggest that group organisation limits the incentive to use debt strategically within the holding-subsidiaries relationship.
The Effect of Debt on Corporate Profitability: Evidence from French Service Sector

Current study aims to provide new empirical evidence on the impact of debt on corporate profitability. This impact can be explained by three essential theories: signaling theory, tax theory and the agency cost theory. Using panel data sample of 2240 French non listed companies of service sector during 1999-2006. By utilizing generalized method of moments (GMM) econometric technique on three measures of profitability ratio (PROF1, PROF2 and ROA), we show that debt ratio has no effect on corporate profitability, regardless of the size of company (VSEs, SMEs or LEs).
The Debt of Italian Non-Financial Firms: An International Comparison

In the run-up to the financial crisis Italian firms significantly increased their debt in absolute terms and in relation to equity and GDP. The positive gap in firms' leverage between Italy and other euro-area countries has widened in recent years, despite the outstanding debt of Italian firms has decreased since 2011. In this work we document the magnitude of this gap using both aggregate macro data and firm-level information. We find that, controlling for several firm-specific characteristics (i.e. age, profitability, asset tangibility, asset liquidity, turnover growth), the leverage of Italian firms is about 10 percentage points higher than in other euro area countries. Differences are systematically larger among micro and small firms, whereas they are small and weakly significant for firms with assets above 300 million euros. JEL Classification: G32.

IMPACT OF DEBT ON PROFITABILITY OF FIRMS; EVIDENCE FROM NON-FINANCIAL SECTOR OF PAKISTAN
This study focuseson expanding the existing empirical knowledge on the impact of debt on profitability of companies. Different sets of variables havebeen used to investigate the relationship between debt and profitability of firms with empirical evidence from the non-financial sector of Pakistan; using panel data of 10 years, ranging between [2003][2004][2005][2006][2007][2008][2009][2010][2011][2012]. Return on Assets is used as the profitability measure and is the dependent variable, whereas; Short Term Debt to Asset, Long Term Debt to Asset, Total Debt to Asset are used as independent variables, while Size, Sales Growth, and Growth Opportunity are used as control variables. Random effect regression analysis is used to find out the impact of debt on profitability. Results indicate a significant but negative relationship between short term debt, long term debt, total debt, and return on assets.

The analysis of the financial structure of firms is crucial in order to investigate their possibilities of profitable progress or, on the other hand, their probability of default. In this perspective, the aim of this work, which is supported by a large analysis sample, is to describe the structure of onerous debt in Italian SMEs and to decipher the possible links between it and the probability of default. We therefore intend to answer two questions: can insolvent firms be identified by analysing only the weight of financial debts? Is it possible to isolate a risk of leverage among the dangers leading companies to bankruptcy?
THE EFFECTS OF PROFITABILITY RATIOS ON DEBT RATIO: THE SAMPLE OF THE BIST MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
The factors affecting debt levels of firms are related to the course of economy as well as the profitability of companies. But it is quite difficult to make a prediction about the course of economy. In this study, it is aimed to reveal how profitability indicators of companies affect debt levels. The purpose of this study is to examine the relation between the debt and profitability ratios of the companies that operate on the BIST (Istanbul Stock Exchange Market) manufacturing industry by using Panel Regression Analysis. The data of the 86 companies within manufacturing industry on the BIST between the years 1994 and 2015 were used. Furthermore, the variables such as asset growth ratio, return on asset, current ratio, leverage ratio, cash rate, new borrowing rates, total financial liability/total liability ratio, return on equity, investment and earnings have been studied. It has been observed in the study that the active growth and the return on equity ratios affect the new borrowing variables positively while investment, current earnings per share ratios affect the new borrowing variables-negatively. In addition, it has been determined in the study that the return on investment, the return on assets and the current ratios affect the leverage ratio negatively while the active growth, the return on equity, the earnings and the cash ratios per share affect the leverage ratios positively. It has also seen that the active return on assets and the earnings per share ratios affect the total financial liabilities/total liability ratios negatively while the asset growth ratios affect the total financial liabilities/total liabilities ratios positively.
The financial leverage in medium-sized companies: an Italian survey

The aim of our work is to highlight the impact of a series of company variables on the financial leverage in a medium-sized company. It permits to evaluate the effect of several decisions on the financial leverage, making them more aware. The sample is composed of all Italian medium-sized companies belong to the manufacturing food and beverage sector, extracted by Amadeus. The sample is composed of 4,705 firms, and the observed period was 2010-2011-2012-2013. It emerged a moderate correlation between liabilities and fixed assets. In addition, fixed assets have not been properly funded by permanent capital, creating probable financial tensions. In addition, we verified the company's attitude to repay debts, thanks to its core business: it emerged a strong and a moderate correlation between liabilities and revenues, decreasing each year; indeed, the core business, thanks to its attitude in generating cash, is useful to pay debts.
Analysis of Debt Effect on Profitability of Manufacturing Companies in Indonesia

This study aims to examine whether short term debt has a negative effect on company profitability and to test whether long term debt has a negative effect on the profitability of manufacturing companies in Indonesia which are listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during the 2014-2018 period. This study has 1 dependent variable namely profitability and uses 2 independent variables namely short term debt and long term debt, and uses 2 control variables namely liquidity and firm size. This study uses secondary data with database collection techniques. The sample of this study was 432 companies in 5 years of research. The data analysis technique used is multiple linear regression analysis through the application of SPSS 22. The results found that short term debt has a negative effect on company profitability and long term debt has a negative effect on company profitability. This shows that the lower the company's debt, the higher the profitability a company will get and otherwise.
