A Survey on Wireless Sensor Network Security
International Journal of Communication Networks and Information Security (IJCNIS), Vol. 1, No. 2, August 2009, Editor: Shafiullah Khan, pp. 59 – 8, 2009
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have recently attracted a lot of interest in the research community due their wide range of applications. Due to distributed nature of these networks and their deployment in remote areas, these networks are vulnerable to numerous security threats that can adversely affect their proper functioning. This problem is more critical if the network is deployed for some mission-critical applications such as in a tactical battlefield. Random failure of nodes is also very likely in real-life deployment scenarios. Due to resource constraints in the sensor nodes, traditional security mechanisms with large overhead of computation and communication are infeasible in WSNs. Security in sensor networks is, therefore, a particularly challenging task. This paper discusses the current state of the art in security mechanisms for WSNs. Various types of attacks are discussed and their countermeasures presented. A brief discussion on the future direction of research in WSN security is also included.
Security in wireless sensor networks: Issues and challanges
2013
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are employed in numerous applications in different areas including military, ecology, and health; for example, to control of important information like the personnel position in a building, as a result, WSNs need security. However, several restrictions such as low capability of computation, small memory, limited resources of energy, and the unreliable channels employ communication in using WSNs can cause difficulty in use of security and protection in WSNs. It is very essential to save WSNs from malevolent attacks in unfriendly situations. Such networks require security plan due to various limitations of resources and the prominent characteristics of a wireless sensor network which is a considerable challenge. This article is an extensive review about problems of WSNs security, which examined recently by researchers and a better understanding of future directions for WSN security.
Security in Wireless Sensor Networks communication protocols: challenges and solutions
Wireless Sensors Network (WSN) are a promising platform for emerging technologies like Internet of Things (IOT), energy optimisation, smart grid, vehicular sensor networks, cloud computing, water monitoring and many others [1]. Generally, sensors have limited resources in terms of energy and of treatment capacities. Despite the indicated limitation, WSN has to permit resolution of many complexes problems concerning Quality of Service (QoS), security, reliability and scalability. Today, WSN is vulnerable to security threats like conventional networks and presents many specific problems to provide security to new generation of internet services such as delay sensitive applications [2] … Providing security over WSN is much more challenging compared with security over wired networks. It is due to sensors mobility, links state and dynamic topology. In the present paper, we discuss the security objectives and requirements. We present some technics proposed in recent years to ensure security in WSN environment.
Security for wireless sensor networks: A review
2009 IEEE Sensors Applications Symposium, 2009
Due to the sensitive nature of the data gathered by many wireless sensor networks (WSNs) it is becoming critical that this data be protected. However, due to the constrained nature of the resources available on sensor nodes, traditional wireless networking security solutions are not viable due to their processing requirements, power consumption, speed and communications overhead. We review the threats and attacks faced by WSNs and then the current state of the art of dedicated WSN security protocols are examined and compared, focusing on their relative strengths and weaknesses.
Securing Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
EDPACS, 2013
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are more widespread in diverse domains (military, medical, etc). So, these networks need a high level of security. However, because of their characteristics, WSN security is, today, the source of several scientific and technical challenges. In this context, lots of work has been realized and most existing security schemes require intensive computation and memory, which are the limiting factors in WSNs. It is very hard to accumulate all requirements in a single security mechanism, as WSNs have severe resources constraints. Before elaborating any security mechanism, it is crucial to take note of all security requirements and the different attacks to which WSNs are exposed as well as the works already realized in this context. This article discusses typical constraints, security goals, threat models, and typical attacks on sensor networks and their defensive techniques or countermeasures relevant to the sensor networks, including security methods.
Security Issues and Challenges in Wireless Sensor Networks : A Survey
2017
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have facilitated human life in different fields: medical, engineering, agriculture, environment, traffic, and military. WSNs are extensively used in monitoring, tracking, and controlling applications; however, their resource constraint nature faces new challenges. These are: centralized management, device heterogeneity, routing protocols, node’s mobility, information privacy, and limited computational-power. WSN spans over a large geographical area; therefore, they must address the issue of routing-protocols, scalability, communication, and security. This survey highlights WSNs’ applications, security requirements, different attacks and defenses, and contemporary issues and challenges. In addition, the integration of virtualization, cloud computing, and Software Defined Networking (SDN) in WSNs is also explained with a new set of challenges. We believe, this paper provides a deep insight and a valuable blue print for interested readers and researchers...
Security Issues in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
International Journal of Future Generation Communication and Networking, 2013
Due to a wide range of applications, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have recently attracted a lot of interest to the researchers. Limited computational capacity and power usage are two major challenges to ensure security in WSNs. Recently, more secure communication or data aggregation techniques have discovered. So, familiarity with the current research in WSN security will benefit researchers greatly. In this paper, security related issues and challenges in WSNs are investigated. We identify the security threats and review proposed security mechanisms for WSNs. Moreover, we provide a brief discussion on the future research direction in WSN security. be easily broken by attackers. Since in most cases, sensor nodes are insecure, so vulnerability to attack is an important issue. In this paper, we explore various security issues in WSNs and try to give a comparative note of various existing security approaches. Our contribution is therefore to provide a detailed yet concise analysis of various existing techniques which will enable the WSN implementers to approach security in an organized way. In this paper, we have reviewed possible attacks on WSN in general as well as existing security mechanism.
Attacks on Wireless Sensor Network: A Survey
Security is a crucial service in wireless sensor networks that is becoming increasingly common in WSNs because wireless sensor nodes are typically deployed in an unattended environment, leaving them open to possible hostile network attack. Because wireless sensor nodes are limited in computing power, data storage and communication capabilities, any user authentication protocol must be designed to operate efficiently in a resource constrained environment. With a widespread growth in the potential applications of WSN, the need for reliable security mechanisms for them has increased manifold. Security protocols in WSNs, unlike the traditional mechanisms, need special efforts and issues to be addressed. The set of challenges in sensor networks are diverse, we focus on attacks on Wireless Sensor Network in this paper.
A Survey on Security in Wireless Sensor Networks
Theory and Practice of Cryptography Solutions for Secure Information Systems
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a promising technology that has attracted the interest of research in the last decade. Security is one of the fundamental issues in sensor networks since sensor nodes are very resource constrained. An attacker may modify, insert, and delete new hardware and software components to the system where a single node, a specific part of the sensing area, and the whole network may become inoperable. Thus, the design of early attack detection and defense mechanisms must be carefully considered. In this chapter, the authors survey attacks and their defense mechanisms in WSNs. Attacks are categorized according to the related protocol layer. They also investigate the open research issues and emerging technologies on security in WSNs.
