WebGIobe - A cloud-based geospatial analysis framework for interacting with climate data
Proceedings of the 7th ACM SIGSPATIAL International Workshop on Analytics for Big Geospatial Data, 2018
While climate models have evolved over time to produce high delity and high resolution climate forecasts, visualization and analysis of the output of the model simulations has been limited, typically constrained to single dimensional charts for visualization and basic aggregate statistics for analytics. Same is true for the large troves of observational data available from meteorological stations all over the world. For richer understanding of climate and the impact of climate change, one needs computational tools that allow researchers, policymakers, and general public, to interact with the climate data. In this paper, we describe, webGlobe, a browser based GIS framework for interacting with climate data, and other datasets available in similar format. webGlobe is a unique resource that allows unprecedented access to climate data through a browser. e framework also allows for deploying machine learning based analytical applications on the climate data without pu ing computational burden on the client. Instead, webGlobe uses a client-server framework, where the server, deployed on a cloud infrastructure, allows for dynamic allocation of resources for running computeintensive applications. e capabilities of the framework will be discussed in context of a use case: identifying extreme events from real and simulated climate data using a Gaussian process based change detection algorithm.
Ecawsoft: A Web based Climate and Weather Data Visualization for Big Data Analysis
Purpose: In Tanzania, data for climate and weather are normally analyzed by Meteorological Agency and then are published through TV, website and radio. Different stakeholders normally obtain the weather and climate data / information in a generalized way. This calls for a need of a system which allows data to be shared openly to different stakeholders so that they can analyze those data as per their specific needs. Design/methodology/approach: The paper presents the overview of the developed system, ECAWsoft. Also, it gives some few interfaces showing different outputs from the system. Abstract-Purpose: In Tanzania, data for climate and weather are normally analyzed by Meteorological Agency and then are published through TV, website and radio. Different stakeholders normally obtain the weather and climate data / information in a generalized way. This calls for a need of a system which allows data to be shared openly to different stakeholders so that they can analyze those data as per their specific needs. The paper presents the overview of the developed system, ECAWsoft. Also, it gives some few interfaces showing different outputs from the system. Findings: The goal of this paper has been attained by developing a working data visualization tool for climate and weather called ECAWsoft. The system is current operational and is providing open data for different stakeholders. It is user friendly and interactive with capability of displaying visualization of data as per fine granularity required by user. Development of open data system for data visualization has lead to a transparency system which is helping farmers, researchers, policy makers (etc.) to make informed decision on weather and climate. Practical implications: The system presented in this paper need to be scaled up so that more data from all weather stations in Tanzania can be populated in real time. Originality/value: The development and adoption of open systems for visualizing weather and climate data remains seriously lacking in many countries including Tanzania. This paper provides an overview of some initiative to fill such a research gap.
Web-based Visualization Platform for Geospatial Data
Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Information Visualization Theory and Applications, 2015
This paper describes a new platform for geospatial data analysis. The main purpose is to explore new ways to visualize and interact with multidimensional satellite data and computed models from various Earth Observation missions. The new V-MANIP platform facilitates a multidimensional exploring approach that allows to view the same dataset in multiple viewers at the same time to efficiently find and explore interesting features within the shown data. The platform provides visual analytics capabilities including viewers for displaying 2D or 3D data representations, as well as for volumetric input data. Via a simple configuration file the system can be configured for different stakeholder use cases, by defining desired data sources and available viewer modules. The system architecture, which will be discussed in this paper in detail, uses Open Geospatial Consortium web service interfaces to allow an easy integration of new visualization modules. The implemented software is based on open source libraries and uses modern web technologies to provide a platform-independent, pluginfree user experience.
Information-computational System for Online Analysis of Georeferenced Climatological Data
2015
An Internet accessible information-computational system (ICS) is dedicated to visualization and analysis of geospatial gridded datasets in the area of Earth system science (local observations, remote sensing and modeling) and climatology in particular. This online ICS is based on a dedicated software framework consisting of three key parts: server-side computational back-end, server-side middleware represented by Geoserver software and PHP controllers, and JavaScript library for building typical components of web mapping client GUI developed using AJAX techniques. Huge multidimensional geospatial datasets are stored in a Network Common Data Form (NetCDF) and processed by a set of validated software modules included in the back-end. Results of a processing are represented by overlapped raster and vector layers placed over a georeferenced background. Data processing functionality allows performing basic and complex statistical analysis of climatological data whilst online geo-informat...
A Data System for Visualizing 4-D Atmospheric CO2 Models and Data
This paper describes a geospatial data system that produces KML representations of complex spatio-temporal datasets related to modeling the atmospheric carbon cycle. KML is an open standard language for transferring annotated geospatial data that can be used by many modern geospatial software packages, particularly virtual globe applications. The server component of the data system is built using a variety of open source software packages, which provide flexibility for creating custom geospatial representations of the datasets. The paper shows examples of how Google Earth, a popular virtual globe with a userfriendly interface, can be used by a diverse group of users as a visualization client to explore the complex scientific datasets that are central to the discussion of climate change and global warming.
Development of a Visualization System for Climate Data Analysis
Now a days the concern about the climate studies is being increasing world over because of the natural disasters across the globe. In the present study an attempt is being made for developing a software system for Climate data Visualisation. The main aim is the development of an user friendly tool for the analysis as well as visualization representation of multi-source and multi-scale weather and climate data, which can be used for the efficient and real time analysis of weather and climate studies. On the growing importance of climate studies and High Performance Computing, different users starting from a farmer to a scientist to a policy maker needs to understand the various changes in the weather and climate parameters like Temperature, rainfall, humidity etc. Data discovery from multisource like satellite, automatic weather station, reanalysis products and numerical weather prediction model outputs can be easily used and analysed.
AGU Fall Meeting Abstracts, 2005
We examine the application of Web Service Architectures and Grid-based distributed computing technologies to geophysics and geo-informatics. We are particularly interested in the integration of Geographical Information System (GIS) services with distributed data mining applications. GIS services provide the general purpose framework for building archival data services, real time streaming data services, and map-based visualization services that may be integrated with data mining and other applications ...
Creating and evaluating web-based visualizations of multi-dimensional spatiotemporal data
Proceedings of the ICA, 2019
In this article, we present a method for visualizing multi-dimensional spatio-temporal data in an interactive web-based geovisualization. Our case study focuses on publicly available weather data in Germany. After processing the data with Python and desktop GIS, we integrated the data as web services in a browser-based application. This application displays several weather parameters with different types of visualisations, such as static maps, animated maps and charts. The usability of the web-based geovisualization was evaluated with a free-examination and a goal-directed task, using eye-tracking analysis. The evaluation focused on the question how people use static maps, animated maps and charts, dependent on different tasks. The results suggest that visualization elements such as animated maps, static maps and charts are particularly useful for certain types of tasks, and that more answering time correlates with less accurate answers.
Visualization of Meteorological Data Sets With Open Source GIS
Seventh Sense Research Group, 2021
In this paper, an open-source Web GIS application for visualization of optimized meteorological data is proposed. This application can visualize real-time data from private meteorological station and from open data resources as OpenWeatherMap platform and other. The private meteorological station is located near the city of Kresna, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. The application visualizes real-time data captured by the meteorological station and stored in a SQL database. The architecture of the open-source Web GIS application and its software realization is also presented. The presented application is developed with open-source software and tools.
