New Ways of Engagement in Higher Education
Journal of Technologies in Society, 2015
The research on student attrition, retention and success in the Netherlands is highly influenced by Tinto's integration theory. In this paper, as part of my broader PhD research, I propose adjusting that theory to achieve a better fit with contemporary society and the living environment of the present generation of students in the developed world. Social media plays a crucial role in contemporary society and thus also in the lives of students. Previous research has been inconclusive about the effect of social media on students' success, however, as it has focused on the quantitative rather than the qualitative aspects of social media use. In line with the above-mentioned pedagogical theory and using insights from recent studies on students' social media use, I discuss different ways to measure the possible success factors. This paper provides a theoretical basis for further research on the success of students in contemporary society as well as insight into the potential uses of social media in education – especially by students outside of the classroom.
Changing the Way of Teaching to Empower Students’ Learning
2017
Technologies and communications existing in today ́s world have changed people's lifestyle, both in their personal life and in their work environment. The amount of information available today, as well as the means of access to information, was unimaginable some years ago. Education in general, but mainly Universities, must adapt to these changes, developing in their graduates skills and competences that will let them face the future world. Today's students adapt better to change, because they have grown up in a world that is constantly changing, and have been practically born with technology. This fact should improve student learning when teaching, as a basis to develop competencies and skills that they will later use in their professional lives. Therefore, it is necessary to make changes in the way of teaching, by introducing innovation, modifying the dynamics of the classes, taking into account the interests of the students, and attending to their different styles of lear...
Active participation of the students in higher education
5th International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies, 2013
"The characteristics of the information society have also been transferred to higher education classrooms. The incorporation of the virtual classroom as a parallel (or complementary) work of the development of classroom has revolutionized not only pedagogic perspective, also different aspects as methodology, assessments. These changes affect both students and teachers. This change means a double challenge, first, in order to coordinate and complement face-to-face and virtual education, and second, to transfer the teacher role (or protagonism) to their students. In this way, we are able to overcome a master class, without real students participation; where the importance of the classroom are focused on the lecturer; giving the leading of the lecturer as transmitter of knowledge. This virtual participation is based on the experience in several courses, where the proposal is to give the learning protagonism to the students, with their abilities, competencies, difficulties… during the process, is necessary to overcome certain obstacles as the time available to work all the content, the (often limited) motivation of these participation or the heterogeneity group. The experience, in particular, examines this teaching experience performed in two academic years (since its inception) a subject of third degree of Pedagogy. The data analysis are based on indicators of the virtual classroom, such as participation through different ways like forums, emails, chats, inquiries…) and individual assessment at the end of the course (qualifications, SEQUA assessment, and internal assessment). The results have showed a high satisfaction of students, a high participation in all the different ways and good final qualification"
In this digital world, opportunities for education are available like never before and it is all because of advancements in the field of ICT. ICTs stand for Information and communication technologies and are defined as diverse set of technological tools and resources used to communicate, to create, disseminate, store and manage information. These technologies include computers, the internet, broadcasting technologies and telephony as well as various services and applications associated with them. Information and Communication Technologies have become one of the basic building blocks of modern society. Developments in ICTs have impacted almost all sectors of society, including the education sector. The use of Information and Communication Technologies in education sector enables the learner to learn online. Online learning has attracted considerable attention among teens and young adults who tend to connect and share common interest. It has changed the way we learn as well as how we teach. The paper explores that the integration of Information and Communication Technologies in the education sector provide new opportunities to a massive number of learners to learn online from anywhere all over the world at their own pace and place without attending the formal classroom practices. It will also discuss about the various trends and platforms of online learning and the problems associated with the effective implementation of them. Moreover, the paper points out the merits of the innovative use of online learning in higher education and it is suggested that it could be a permanent change agent that boost innovation in higher education learning arenas.
INNOVATIVE APPROACHES IN UNIVERSITY AND LIFELONG STYLE OF LEARNING DESIGNED FOR NEW GENERATIONS
The intensity of changes, caused by digitalization and globalization, opens up space for new manners of thinking aimed at sustainable company business-making for a longer period of time. The knowledge era is shifting towards the era of design thinking, entrepreneurship and innovation. Some recent research show that collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking are the four skills acting as indispensable wheels on the exciting 21 st century' journey. How are millennials prepared for new challenges as a new generation of working force? The Y generation or digital natives are different in their learning style and the way in which they expect to be trained, and coached. According to recent literature, millennials prefer interactive collaborative learning, like sharing stories and experience with their peers. The flipped-classroom in university education is a new way of education that, in comparison to traditional style of lecturing, is more personalized to students giving them learning by doing outcomes. The paper would represent results of the research conducted among Serbian millennials regarding their style of learning and behavior, and attitudes toward collaborative and interactive learning like the flipped-classroom. In 2021, the Y generation will take up more than 50% of Serbian workforce. What type of skills have they acquired to be more proactive and flexible to open themselves to innovation in their working places?
