Are deep-water corals important habitats for fishes?
Cold-Water Corals and Ecosystems, 2005
High densities of fishes in aggregations of deep-water corals (eg, of the genera Primnoa, Paragorgia, Paramuricea) do not necessarily indicate that corals are important habitats in terms of population processes. Frequency dependent distribution models provide a basis ...

While there is increasing evidence for habitat specialization in coral reef fishes, the extent to which different corals support different fish communities is not well understood. Here we quantitatively assess the relative importance of different coral species in structuring fish communities and evaluate whether sampling scale and coral colony size affect the perceived strength of fish-habitat relationships. Fish communities present on colonies of eight coral species (Porites cylindrica, Echinopora horrida, Hydnophora rigida, Stylophora pistillata, Seriatopora hystrix, Acropora formosa, A. tenuis and A. millepora) were examined in the Lizard Island lagoon, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Additionally, the differences in fish communities supported by three coral species (P. cylindrica, E. horrida, H. rigida) were investigated at three spatial scales of sampling (2x2 m, 1x1 m, 0.5x0.5 m). Substantial differences in fish communities were observed across the different coral species, with...
Coral reef fish population in the western extremity of the Coral Triangle
2018
The central and north west coast of Sabah lies along the western extremity of the Coral Triangle, within which are situated several marine protected areas (MPAs). In the present study we determined in situ coral reef fish populations in several localities along the west coast of Sabah, by exploring species abundance, richness and diversity of ten economically important fish species. The underwater surveys were conducted from May to December 2015. During this eight- month period, surveys at each site were undertaken once every two months. Dives were conducted during the daylight hours. A total of 171 individuals from the targeted fish species were enumerated from the 349 still images and 220 minutes of video footage. Abundance was observed mainly in the semi-protected MPA (n=110) with only one fish species recorded with more than 2 individuals at protected MPA and unprotected sites. We observed a correlation between fish species richness and coral topographic complexity, with study s...
Reef fishes in biodiversity hotspots are at greatest risk from loss of coral species
PloS one, 2015
Coral reef ecosystems are under a variety of threats from global change and anthropogenic disturbances that are reducing the number and type of coral species on reefs. Coral reefs support upwards of one third of all marine species of fish, so the loss of coral habitat may have substantial consequences to local fish diversity. We posit that the effects of habitat degradation will be most severe in coral regions with highest biodiversity of fishes due to greater specialization by fishes for particular coral habitats. Our novel approach to this important but untested hypothesis was to conduct the same field experiment at three geographic locations across the Indo-Pacific biodiversity gradient (Papua New Guinea; Great Barrier Reef, Australia; French Polynesia). Specifically, we experimentally explored whether the response of local fish communities to identical changes in diversity of habitat-providing corals was independent of the size of the regional species pool of fishes. We found th...
Demography of deep-dwelling red coral (Corallium rubrum) populations
2013
Mediterranean red coral (Corallium rubrum, L 1758, Octocorallia, Gorgonacea) is a colonial anthozoan endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. Due to the high economic value of its carbonate axial skeleton this species has been harvested and traded for more than 2 thousand years. In the last two decades a reduction of the overall fishing yield by 2/3 has been recorded. Although our knowledge on the demographic features of red coral populations living between 10 and 50 meter depth has increased considerably in recent years, the main life-history traits of deeper populations (the main target of harvesting nowadays), are still largely unknown. To increase the demographic knowledge on the latter populations an ad hoc cruise was carried out during early Summer 2010 in the North and Central-East Tyrrhenian Sea, between 62 and 120 m depth. The aim of this study is to investigate the demography of deep Corallium rubrum populations located in Amalfi Coast/Ischia Island (Campania) and Elba Island (Tu...
