E-portfolio as a Higher Training Professional Tool: a Comparative-Descriptive Study

Portfolio had become a popular word by the early 1990 in educational context. Since that time, many definitions and various assessments have emerged (Kelonovskh, 2010). E-portfolio has turn out to be a popular pedagogical device on the higher academic landscape, often called a ―high effect practice‖ that has the capacity to generate transformative knowledge. After reflecting on the academic developments and undergraduate teaching practices with E-portfolio, we recognized regions of resonance with, and misalignment between, research literature and the problems of implementation. In this study, teachers’ experiences with Eportfolios are investigated, and a comparative analysis of these narratives along E-portfolio is presented. In this article, we provide a comprehensive literature review, an outline of the experiences, and a discussion about the inconsistencies springing up from the comparisons. Portfolios are often used in higher education for learning, promotion, assessment and appraisal. Thanks to technical developments in recent years, portfolios are increasingly digital rather than physical. E-portfolios provide a comprehensive way to document personal progress, to reflect on work activities, to support learning and to serve as a tool for feedback and evaluation. However, there has been very little research conducted on the use of e-portfolios for learning purposes in higher education. This paper focuses on the use of e-portfolios in teacher education. Six students in a master programme work with e-portfolios in the course of their practical vocational training. In a mixed-methods design, the students were interviewed about their experiences and the process of writing e-portfolios. In addition, a document analysis of the e-portfolio entries has been conducted in terms of content and structure. The findings of this study provide indications on how e-portfolios can be used effectively in teacher training and which promoting and inhibiting conditions students encounter.

E-portfolio is a learning tool that is recognized as valuable in enhancement of the quality of teaching and learning and orientation towards student-centred learning. It can be used for various purposes in education, from storing learners' work, recording achievements, as assessment of and for learning, as a means for monitoring learners' progress, for presentation and marketing purposes or for mobility between educational institutions. E-portfolio has been present for more than a decade and its benefits in education were immediately recognized with predictions for prominent future. But today, it is still being rediscovered, explained and introduced despite some really good examples of use. The University of Zagreb started with the process of e-portfolio implementation in 2008 by establishing the university e-portfolio system and providing support to users. In 2012, this process was fostered with the project "Use of the e-portfolio system in the educational process" in cooperation with the University of Porto, Portugal. The presentation will summarise opportunities of using e-portfolio in higher education with emphasis on the e-portfolio as a learning activity. Also, an overview will be given on the e-portfolio implementation process at the University of Zagreb.

A theoretical framework for designing, implementing and researching students’ engagement, learning, and personal development in e-portfolios is described in this article. After providing an overview of the research on e-portfolios in education, the paper analyses the theoretical foundations of e-portfolio learning. Following it proposes a conceptual and organizational framework for teachers and instructors a) to conceptualize principles of student motivation, self-directed learning and reflection, and b) to implement effective e-portfolio learning initiatives at secondary and higher education, and teacher professional development. Finally, the article presents representative case studies and good practice examples regarding the implementation of e-portfolio initiatives using different tools in various educational contexts and programs.
E-portfolios along the Lifelong Learning Cycle: Differences between Use, Pedagogy and Context

This short paper will discuss the initial evaluation findings of an ongoing project utilising the use of e portfolios at key stages of transition and professional development. The midpoint data will illustrate that eportfolios offer different benefits within the lifelong learning cycle. There are differences in the pedagogical outcomes, the use of the eportfolios and learner and mentor/supervisor engagement within different contexts, particularly between the educational and work spheres.
