The Pied Piper of Hamelin At the Confluence Of Literature, History, Psychology, Language Theory and Religious Thought

Please note the following correction. The text includes a reference to John and Paul as 'apostles' in connection with the reference to 'the day of John and Paul, the 26th of June in 1284 when the Pied Piper entered Hamelin according to the earliest known record of the Piper's appearance in the town. Subsequent research has shown me that the John and Paul in question were Christian martyrs who were executed during the rule of Julian the Apostate, who died on the 26th of June in 363 during a military excursion into Parthia.. The story of the Pied Piper arguably finds its origin in a campaign to eradicate cultic midsummer practices in midsummer on the rocky height near Hamelin referred to earlier as Koppelberg or the Kopan.

A Segment from a Projected Revision of a Book Entitled: In Pursuit of Verbal Clues Detected in the Body of Literature

In this segment we take a close look at such poems as The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Robert Browning's "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" with a view to discover the role of verbal clues based on "cross" and "wander" as pointers to fundamental but tacit themes of religious and philosophical significance within an overall 'allegorical' frame. Do We Need Rats to Make Sense of the Story of the Pied Piper?

This article presents a holistic approach to interpreting the story of the Pied Piper that balances an investigation of historical origins of the legend with a discussion of the psychological factors that determined how it can be interpreted. orrection: At the time of writing this article I wrongly assumed that the reference to the day of John and Paul was directed to the apostles bearing those names in the New Testament. In fact the day commemorated two Christian martyrs who were executed under the reign of the emperor Julian in the fourth century. As soon as possible I hope to revise the text accordingly.

THE UNITARY FOUNDATION OF THE THEME OF THE PIED PIPER AND ITS MANY HISTORICAL AND LITERARY RAMIFICATIONS

This is a section of a proposed book concerned with 'questing unity." The challenge presented by the complex of themes and literary works that center on the Pied Piper of Hamelin is great indeed. In literary works the figure can appear in the guise of the devil or in that of a messianic deliverer of the young from the corruptions of society.. Can such factors as sublimation and introversion throw light on the question under discussion?

A Focus on two Blind Spots in Literary Theory and Criticism Relating to the Pied Piper of Hamelin and Poetic Wandering

"Much fiddling in the Ivory Tower while Rome Burns" Let me say a word on the above rather odd title. There can be no doubt that it alludes to the popular notion that Nero indulged in lyrical pursuits while he viewed the fire that destroyed much of ancient Rome. " Ivory towers " belong to the domain of the Ivy League and similar august university locations. Combining these allusions, might we derive from the title the implication that academics could do more to apply their intelligence and their vast fund of wisdom to the problems that face humanity in a far from happy world? In earlier times prophets and poets could still claim an authority of divine origin, the authority of 'the Word. " Unfortunately the absent consensus on the existence and the nature of such an authority prevents the wise of our day from claiming a divine warrant for their expostulations, whatever these might be. I limit my discussion to the coterie of scholars, experts, pundits and critics that occupy the domain of literary criticism. Those seeking to discover the modern equivalent of the Tower of Babel would do well to seek it here.-the perfect setting for dogmatic advocates of the most disparate and contentious points of view, finding perhaps only in the speakers at Hyde Park Corner true fellow spirits. On one matter they agree, shun anything suspiciously like a religious point of view in the course of interpreting works of literature. This aversion produces blind spots in a refusal to take seriously matters that most surely deserve serious scrutiny. see http://www.lulu.com/shop/julian-scutts/much-fiddling-in-the-ivory-tower-as-rome-burns/paperback/product-23686465.html

Robert Browning's " The Pied Piper of Hamelin " viewed in the light of his earliest known verses

The two articles that follow pose a remarkable contrast in ways one can interpret the figure of the Pied Piper, though each inspects poems written by the same author, Robert Browning. A general failure to recognize the profundity and gravity of his famous " child's story,' even by scholarly specialists in the area of Victorian verse, must have something to do with the tendency to shun anything that resembles a religious (in the widest sense, openminded) point of view on great works of literature. ‘Spirited Away: The Role of the Outsider and the Representation of Transylvania in the Pied Piper and Dracula Myth in Britain and Germany’

This essay is developed from a paper at the ‘Education, Beliefs and Cultures’ Conference at the University of Timisoara in Romania in 2015. It is important in addressing British perceptions of Romania in literary texts, together with an interrogation of the representation of the outsider in the Dracula and Pied Piper myths. It makes a valuable contribution by bringing these debates into the twenty first century. I demonstrate, for example, how the story of the Pied Piper is being redeployed in an analysis of European paranoia surrounding migrant workers and asylum seekers in the present. I also situate these texts within current debates about racial stereotyping in Victorian Gothic literature
