Video Conferencing System For Distance Education (original) (raw)

The Use and Benefit of a Xbox Kinect based Tracking System in a Lecture Recording Service

Lecture recordings became an important technology to support students in learning new and complex content. But the effort for a lecture recording is enormous, especially in panel lectures, where a cameraman is needed to focus the camera on the lecturer while he or she is moving from one panel to another. In big lecture halls at an University this issue is even bigger. To reduce costs and efforts automatic tracking systems are needed. This paper describes a motion tracking system based on a Microsoft Kinect sensor to adjust a remotely controllable camera to the lecturer automatically. We describe how the system could provide a benefit for a regular recording service, but also which structures need to be established to provide such a service at the University of Applied Sciences in Osnabrück. Next to the system functionality the paper describes three implemented tracking scenarios and the key issues within such scenarios.

Real-time camera control for videoconferencing over the Internet

Proceedings Fifth International Conference on Real-Time Computing Systems and Applications (Cat. No.98EX236)

This paper presents an extension to the ePresence Interactive Media webcasting infrastructure to support real-time voice and video conferencing for a few attendees while concurrently streaming an event to many others. We emphasize the tools for enhancing awareness of the remote attendees in the lecture hall or seminar room, and for facilitating communication between remote attendees and the lecturer. We present preliminary results of a field study of the use of this environment for a multi-campus university class.

A live video imaging method for capturing presentation information in distance learning

Multimedia and Expo, 2000. …, 2000

We propose a new approach of video imaging method suitable to support distance learning. Automatic active camera control and video selection system visualizes presentation information of a lecturer and active students. We consider dynamic situation of the lecture to determine the appropriate target object to be shot which gives remote students live lecture information. We have implemented our method and used it in several distance learning courses held between Kyoto university and UCLA.

A Distance Education System with Automatic Video Source Selection and Switching

Advanced Technology for Learning, 2008

Videoconferencing technology offers new possibilities for distance education, as it provides an interactive way to teach remote students. To provide proper interactivity and to ensure the students' learning, it is important to transmit the correct view from the classroom to the remote sites. Traditionally the teacher has to take care of the source selection and control the equipment located in the classroom. From the teacher's point of view, this means additional work and concentrating solely on teaching can be difficult. The goal of the automatic system described in this paper is to reduce the teacher's workload in a videoconferencing situation. The system developed takes care of the video source switching without the teacher's control. The system observes the teacher's actions using the cameras installed in the classroom. A rule-based video source selection is made on the basis of both the teacher's location and the document camera usage information. Actual video source switching is carried out by the equipment and auditorium control unit installed in the classroom. The results obtained indicate that the system implemented can clearly provide help for the teacher when using a distance education system.

Development Analysis of Multipoint Video Conferencing in Education

Buletin Ekonomi: Manajemen, Ekonomi Pembangunan, Akuntansi, 2019

In this modern era, people can do meetings by doing video conferencing. By doing video conferencing we can reach our colleagues who are geographically far from us in real time, as if we are close to them through video and audio visual. it's just that sometimes the capacity of video conferencing tools becomes an obstacle in doing conference simultaneously for multiple locations. Video conferencing between three or more locations is possible through the Multipoint Control Unit (MCU) system. This research was conducted at one of the educational institutions which had several branches spread in various locations and each location had a video conference tool. MCU system that was used previously is the sx20 telepresence which can only accommodate 3 video conference locations simultaneously. from this problem this educational institution developed a new MCU system using Acano. By using this Acano system can support HD quality video so that video and audio can be clearly displayed. Di ...

Gesture and scene recognition based autonomous video lecture acquisition framework for distance learning

… Conference on Power Systems(PE'06); …, 2006

Video lectures are considered among reliable means for delivering class room content to distant students. Such videos are recorded manually which involves considerable time and cost of human personnel. This paper presents a novel framework for the recording of such videos. Gesture recognition and scene analysis are carried to locate the intended area of interest in the scene, to be captured by the video camera. Master-slave camera architecture is proposed for practical implementation of the system. Gesture recognition and scene analysis algorithms are applied to the video of master camera to locate intended area of interest. This information is then passed to slave camera to capture the video.

Video Conferencing and its Application in Education

JTTTP - JOURNAL OF TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT THEORY AND PRACTICE, 2020

In many countries, the demand for jobs in the conventional education system far exceeds the available job offers. Under the right circumstances, open and distance learning systems have proven that they can provide quality education and training to many people at lower unit costs than conventional education systems. In remote or sparsely populated areas, it is not economically feasible to provide the full range of educational opportunities and vocational training through the conventional institutions. Video conferencing as a method of distance education enables learning and training to be delivered in a more efficient and economical way. Due to the rapid development of technology, the idea that a student is trained as a young person for the same life-long job is becoming less viable. Most people are likely to change the profession for at least two or three times throughout their careers. This paper provides some technologies and standards used in video conferencing. In addition, it o...

Designing Video Conference Application for Distance Learning

Abstract Distance learning system is a real time communication application service used to perform learning process in Internet. The distance learning system application can support text communication, face-to-face communication, dialogue-based communication, and sharing material presentation. The design videoconferencing application for distance learning system consists of three parts, which are a server application program, a moderator application program and a client application program. The importance of the real time communication in organizing distance learning system is its capality to create virtual environment (Internet) as a replication of real world communication, because it supports text communication, file presentation, face-to-face communication and direct dialogue between participants. The face-to-face communication and direct dialogue can create a dynamic interaction environment, because participants can interact face-to-face, directly talk to each other, obtain feedback, present physical reaction of other participants, and chatting using text communication. It become a solution to the problem of distance and time for meeting activities of two or more individuals using internet.

Real-Time System of Hand Detection And Gesture Recognition In Cyber Presence Interactive System For E-Learning

The development of technologies of multimedia, linked to that of Internet and democratization of high outflow, has made henceforth E-learning possible for learners being in virtual classes and geographically distributed. The quality and quantity of asynchronous and synchronous communications are the key elements for E-learning success. It is important to have a propitious supervision to reduce the feeling of isolation in E-learning. This feeling of isolation is among the main causes of loss and high rates of stalling in E-learning. The researches to be conducted in this domain aim to bring solutions of convergence coming from real time image for the capture and recognition of hand gestures. These gestures will be analyzed by the system and transformed as indicator of participation. This latter is displayed in the table of performance of the tutor as a curve according to the time. In case of isolation of learner, the indicator of participation will become red and the tutor will be informed of learners with difficulties to participate during learning session.

Automated lecture recording system

2010 International Conference on System Science and Engineering, 2010

Lecture recording plays an important role in online learning and distance education. Most of they are recorded by a cameraman or a static camera. In this paper, we propose an automatic lecture recording system. A Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) camera is shooting as it operated by a cameraman. Three parts are developed in this system. The first one is preprocessing for detecting the position of the lecturer and the screen. The second part is designed to track their motion to define the lecture information. According to the tracking result, we can control the PTZ camera in the third part based on the camera action table designed beforehand.
