The study of the impact of architecture design on cognitive radio
2011
Software Defined Radios (SDR) allow a dynamic reconfiguration technique of reusing hardware to implement the physical layer processing of a Cognitive Radio (CR)equipment. This paper exhibits three hardware implementation approaches for an SDR respectively called velcro, parametrization and dynamic partial reconfiguration. The main objective of this paper is to discuss the best way to design a flexible, high performed and a low power consumption CR equipment.
Cognitive radio and networking research at Virginia Tech
2009
Abstract More than a dozen Wireless@ Virginia Tech faculty are working to address the broad research agenda of cognitive radio and cognitive networks. Our core research team spans the protocol stack from radio and reconfigurable hardware to communications theory to the networking layer. Our work includes new analysis methods and the development of new software architectures and applications, in addition to work on the core concepts and architectures underlying cognitive radios and cognitive networks.
Cognitive Radio: Enabling Technology in Need of Coordination
Competition and Regulation in Network Industries, 2011
As enabling technology, Cognitive Radio (CR) holds an interesting promise for improved utilization of the radio frequency spectrum by using knowledge of the local radio environment and understanding the user's communications needs. These CR capabilities are highly valuable for the introduction of new radio communication services, as all (usable) radio spectrum has been allocated and assigned, while in practice the spectrum appears to be under-utilized, considering time and place. However, the CR innovation journey is still in an early stage of unfolding. There is a large degree of uncertainty that will have to be mitigated before successful, large-scale deployment of the technology may be expected and the potential economic value can be realized. This contribution is aimed at identifying the instances of coordination that have led to successful deployment of new radio technologies in the past in an attempt to support the successful deployment of CR-based products and services in...
