Learning in Knowledge Communities

In contemporary organizations, significant emphasis is placed on the processes of knowledge sharing and learning, which are increasingly seen as crucial to organizational success. Information and communication technologies play an important role in these areas, but to many there is a lack of clarity regarding how such technologies can be best deployed. In this article, we provide a wide range of examples of where technology has been used to support learning in knowledge communities, with varying degrees of success. We use this material to develop specific characteristics of effective knowledge communities, and detail ways in which both the context and the technology should be managed.
Collective intelligence and online learning communities

Information society brings new forms of communication models where citizens live with multiple digital identities on nomadic online communities. These collectives are capable of interact themselves to create new forms of knowledge sharing experiences and recycling old fashioned model of information management, and thus creating learning communities through informal practices. In this paper we analyze these digital communities representing new forms of learning styles and new approaches for open knowledge as a new trend for the next decade society.
On the Design of Support Systems for Knowledge Sharing within a Social Learning and Sharing Context

The issue the paper address concerns the design of IS-based support systems for the sharing of knowledge within a social learning and sharing setting, such as a community of practice. Here we take a look at theories of social learning systems and social context in order to draw forth design implications for IS-based support systems. This is done in order to address issues or problems of traditional support systems for sharing knowledge, such as 'digital libraries' or 'best practice' sharing systems. These issues or problems are related to both the contribution and adoption of knowledge as well as the processes of creation and upholding of shared interpretations and meaning.
Beyond End User Content to Collaborative Knowledge

Most studies of social tools examine usage of each tool in isolation. Instead, we explore how online communities (a) combine multiple social tools, and (b) use social tools together with external tools. Based on interviews with community leaders and quantitative analysis of 128 online community spaces, we explored the combined use of six social software tools-wikis, blogs, forums, social bookmarks, social file repositories, and task-management tools. We contribute a detailed characterization of how enterprise online communities combine multiple social tools, adding to our understanding of community behaviors: Communities combine social tools to curate and organize complex information spaces. When combined, each tool is used for limited "core" functions; thus "social" features are not always leveraged for every tool. Leaders and members divide labor by tool boundaries. Our results suggest that an important overlooked aspect of social media concerns how different tools can be effectively combined. While most prior work on communities emphasizes end user content, we identify additional important design activities where community participants curate and organize pre-existing content from multiple tools to serve their community needs.

E-Sherpas: Strategies for Supporting Web-Based Knowledge Building Communities
There is growing interest in the use of collaborative learning in Web-based courses. The integration of collaborative learning into Web-based instruction, however, poses a number of challenges to the instructor in monitoring and supporting the work of virtual learning teams. The e-Sherpa represents one approach to provide needed support. The e-Sherpa is a non-authoritarian support person who helps online teams accomplish their learning goals. The paper describes the roles, strategies, issues, challenges, and benefits of using e-Sherpas to support virtual learning teams. It discusses the implications of e-Sherpas for the design of future Web-based learning communities.
Support systems for knowledge sharing within a social learning context: a research proposal

Many organizations have developed digital libraries resources, containing the collected wisdom of the organization, that may be used by its members when they find themselves in unknown or problematic situations. However, most of the knowledge sharing and learning processes, within organizations, are social processes, anchored in the daily work practice with its specific problems and are motivated by the engagement and participation of the individuals in the practice. Previous efforts to build knowledge base systems have here neglected such issues as that interpretations of knowledge derived from experiences generated through previous problem solving are socially constructed and directly related to the problem situations at hand. The proposed research aims to explore how support systems for knowledge base may be designed, in terms of functionality and structures, in order to support a social learning model to better reflect the processes of learning and knowledge sharing within organizations.
Supporting Community Awareness, Learning, and Evolvement in an Organizational Learning Environment

The SCALE objective is to develop a toolbox of intelligent solutions designed to enhance the current state-of-the-art distributed organizational learning and knowledge management technology. This toolbox will attempt to mediate and facilitate the sharing of knowledge between peers, and promote community awareness, learning, and evolvement. In this paper, we describe the first two intelligent tools that we have begun to develop toward this effort. The first is a social network based visualization tool, intended to raise users' awareness of existing communities of practice, and the second is a socially aware recommendation agent.

Abstract: The intellectual capital of the firm—an intangible asset embedded in the knowledge and expertise of a firm's employees—is increasingly recognized as a source of sustainable competitive advantage. The establishment of virtual communities is among the most common approaches toward knowledge management adopted within firms. Such communities provide contexts where individuals within firms can come together, bound by shared roles, bases of expertise, or passion for specific topics, and interact.
