Performance monitoring in communication networks, which is the main topic of this thesis, is an essential part of performance and network management. The applications cover a number of different areas such as daily operations and maintenance, usage information for billing purposes, customer reports, traffic control, planning, and dimensioning.
An Efficient Scheme for Aggregation and Presentation of Network Performance
2004
Description/Abstract The Internet is presently being used to support increasingly complex interaction models as a result of more and more applications, services and frameworks becoming network centric. Efficient utilization of network and networked resources is of paramount importance. Network performance gathering is a precursor to any scheme that seeks to provide adaptive routing capabilities for interactions.
Next Generation Delay and Performance Measuring Algorithm for an Overall Network
As a network administrator or as a client, we need to perform the important operation over network such fixing a schedule of video conference, sending data, or doing maintenance related task regarding Quality of Service (QoS). It will be more reliable if we can get the information of the delay, performance statistics and error rate of the overall network that we belong to or we are maintaining. We propose the algorithm to implement such a program. We show that the method can operate in present and future networks in a few seconds. An extended timestamp like clock skew travels entire network randomly and gets the useful information of the entire network like processing time of each node, delay of each traveled path, number of hops it traveled, and error rate.
Architecture for the management and presentation of communication network performance data
IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, 2006
Packet-based data networks such as British Telecommunications (BT) plc's switched multimegabit data service (SMOS) have performance that varies with customer behavior, network design, and network provision. This paper describes a system researched to monitor such networks from the customer's perspective, but on behalf of the operator. The information generated allows the operator to determine whether the network is performing correctly or whether changes or customer load will require the network to be changed in some way. Such networks are increasingly important as many parts of the Internet are built on similar technologies. The paper specifically considers an architecture that encompasses all the main functionality involved in performance management of networks. Consideration is given to the management and dissemination of the data collected. A database to enhance network data mining performance is described. A method to identify the periods of significance in the measurement data based on a statistical test and a neural network is incorporated into a realization of the architecture. In addition, a novel mechanism for the real-time presentation of the network performance data in an operator-friendly manner is given.
An efficient storage technique for network monitoring data
2011
Monitoring modern networks involves storing and transferring huge amounts of data. For this reason, compression techniques are typically used in order to reduce the space and time needed for these operations. The main drawback of this approach is that, when data has to be processed, a preliminary decompression is necessary, which increases the time and computational power needed. To cope with this problem, in this paper we propose a technique that allows to transform the measurement data in a representation format meeting two main objectives at the same time. Firstly, it allows to perform a number of operations directly on the transformed data with a controlled loss of accuracy, thanks to the mathematical framework it is based on. Secondly, the new representation has a small memory footprint, allowing to reduce the space needed for data storage and the time needed for data transfer. To validate our technique, we perform an analysis of its performance in terms of accuracy and memory footprint. The results show that the transformed data closely approximates the original data (within 5% relative error) while achieving the compression ratio of 20%; storage footprint can be gradually made close to that of the state-of-theart compression tools, such as bzip2, if higher approximation is allowed.
Wide Area Performance Monitoring Using Aggregate Latency Profiles
Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2004
A challenge in supporting Wide Area Applications (WAA) is that of scalable performance management. Individual Latency Profiles (iLPs) were proposed in the literature to capture latency distributions experienced by clients when connecting to a server; it is a passive measurement made by client applications and is gathered on a continuous basis. In this paper, we propose a scalable technique for managing iLPs by aggregating them into aggregate Latency Profiles (aLPs). We use measures such as mutual information and correlation to compare the similarity of pairs of iLPs.
APPLICATION BASED PERFORMANCE MONITORING HEAVY DATA TRANSMISSION OF LOCAL AREA NETWORK
Kufa Journal of Engineering, 2022
In Computer network, many applications should be work online, these applications have been discussed in the application layer of the OSI Reference Model, the need for a high-performance network varies according to the applications used in those networks depending on the files that are transmitted through this application, for example, in the e-mail application, most of the transmitted files are a text file and this is a small file that does not need a high-performance network to move through. On the other hand, on the contrary, there is the voice application (VoIP), which needs a high-speed network to transmit it and without audio interruption, because the voice also application needs a high-performance network, unlike what is in the e-mail application.
New Innovations in Performance Analysis of Computer Networks: A Review
Innovation is the application of new solutions that meet new requirements, inarticulate needs, or existing market needs. In the field of performance analysis of networks, new innovations are springing up which are focusing on converged networks (data, voice and video). Among the recent ones are both open source and commercial tools developed to improve and simplify performance analysis techniques vis-à-vis analytical modeling, simulation and measurements. In this paper, an attempt is made to consider the concept of performance analysis in general while focusing on computer networks. The three broad techniques currently being employed in performance analysis of computer networks are explored. The nature and the requisite skills for a performance analyst are enumerated. In addition, the performance metrics of computer networks are reviewed with available software tools for carrying out network performance analysis. Finally, the new innovations and future focus of performance analysis with emphasis on computer networks with a view to intimating new researchers in this field with requisite knowledge for a less stressful research endeavour is considered.
